胡适《墓门行》的糊涂账

昨天上午我正忙得不亦乐乎地毛体踏思婷的时候，一个朋友给我发了这样一首诗，问我翻译得怎么样：

墓门行 - Passing a tomb gate

伊人寂寂而长眠兮，Rest In Peace alone,
任春与秋之代谢。As spring and autumn came and gone.
野花繁其弗赏兮，Blossoming wild flowers you could not enjoy，
亦谁（何）知水（冰）深而雪下。Neither could you know the depth of ice and cold snow
水潺湲兮， 长槐垂首而听之。Water stream flows gently, tall pagoda (locust) trees are listening.
鸟声喧兮， 好音谁其应之？Birds are chirping, but who would respond the pretty chords?
风呜咽兮而怒飞兮，Wind is crying, and angrily flying
陈死人兮安所知兮。The lying dead could no longer feel anything
和平之神穆以慈兮，The God of Peace is kind and mercy.
长眠之人于斯永依兮。May the dead be remembered forever

我看了一眼，说：“翻译得不错啊！谁的诗呀？”

朋友又给我发了这样一张图片：

我说：“原来是胡适的诗啊！我没读过呢。”

朋友说：“你能不能给翻译一下？”

我说：“我觉得英文翻译得挺好的。”

朋友说：“不是，我是说翻译成中文。”

我觉得有些好笑：“那本来就是中文啊！还要翻译什么中文？”

朋友说：“我是说把那古诗翻译成白话文。你知道我的中文水平.”

我试着口述了一下：

“那人已经静静地长眠地下，任由春去秋来时光荏苒。繁花似锦她也不能再欣赏啊！又怎能感知冰雪幽深？流水潺潺，槐树低垂倾听；鸟鸣啾啾，美妙的声音有谁呼应？风声如泣如诉呼啸而过，久已死去的人又能有什么感觉？幸得和平之神仁慈地赐予安宁，使长眠的人获得永远的安慰啊！”

朋友表示感谢，我说：“这只是我粗略的理解，不一定准确。其实胡适这诗有几点我不太清楚。第一点是关于伊人。伊人可以是指自己的意中人，美人儿，或者是泛指一般人。另外关于‘陈死人’虽然是泛指死了很久的人，放在这里感觉冷漠，所以我搞不清胡适与死者的关系，感觉只是偶尔经过坟墓的路人偶发感慨，”

到了晚上，我有空时查询了一下，才发现墓门行根本就不是胡适的原创。在《胡适留学日记》卷九 三0、《墓门行》有原文记录：

四月十二日）

　　ROADSIDE REST

　　(Anonymous inscription at the entrance to a little wayside burial ground at North Woodstock, N. H.)

　　Such quiet sleep has come to them,

　　The Springs and Autumns pass,

　　Nor do they know if it be snow

　　Or daisies in the grass.

　　All day the birches bend to hear

　　The river's undertone;

　　Across the hush a fluting thrush

　　Sings evensong alone.

　　But down their dream there drifts no sound:

　　The winds may sob and stir;

　　On the still breast of Peace they rest—

　　And they are glad of her.

从原诗可知胡适把They翻译成伊人，实在易生误解，伊人一般都是指女子吧，但原诗只是指墓地里的死者。还有把雏菊翻译成野花，把画眉翻成鸟儿，把桦树翻成长槐。。。看来胡适为了雅一点也不在意信与达。

不但如此，我对图片中只签名胡适也感觉不舒服，觉得若不是深究之人，都会很容易误解那就是他的原创，大有欺世盗名之嫌啊！故有此口水贴，戒之。
