Pumpkin\'s father \'self-centred and so arrogant\'

Xue won few friends in his previous visit to the US where he was seen as a lonely, arrogant man with an inflated sense of his own ability, according to Los Angeles practitioners of t\'ai chi.

His six months in the city in 2000 garnered him about 20 students, but none stayed with him for very long, one former student said.

Xue was sufficiently well thought of, however, to feature on the cover of the April 2000 edition of T\'ai Chi magazine.

An experienced t\'ai chi exponent, Doria Cook-Nelson said Xue taught a specialised form of t\'ai chi that did not draw many students. She said her encounters with him were business like.

But the man who introduced him to Los Angeles, instructor Sun Anguang, said Xue alienated many other teachers and practitioners by disparaging other forms of t\'ai chi.

He regarded himself as the highest level ... it seems to me he was just a little bit above average, Mr Sun said. He had some students but he could not get along with his students.

When he arrived [in Los Angeles] I did not know too much about him so I introduced him to our organisation. He did not communicate well ... the first time he met these people, he was not polite.

Mr Sun said Xue had obtained his name from the Yellow Pages listing for his t\'ai chi academy. Mr Sun said he had not known him before Xue arrived asking for help.

It seems to me he was lonely with nowhere to go. All the time he was at my place, Mr Sun sadi. He introduced himself to me saying something about his background, how good he was, how powerful he was.

He was self-centred and so arrogant.

One of those students, Kent Miu, said he believed Xue exaggerated his abilities in martial arts. He had his own type of t\'ai chi. Some students stayed only a few days, Mr Miu said.

Another student, Steven Yang, said Xue revealed that he had divorced his first wife in China. He was single during his time in the US but married after returning to New Zealand.
