At the very time that Cookson published this book, I happened to be attending one of the boarding schools he writes about (he mentions my school by name). And thanks to interschool dances and similar events, I'm acquainted with several more of these schools. This made reading this book an amusing experience for me. It's true that these schools are somewhat academically better than private day schools, but Cookson seems to imagine that we were coached in Machiavellian tactics for holding onto our power and leading the masses (or keeping them in line, if you prefer). Maybe I just didn't enroll in that class! Also, boarding schools are expensive, but they're not nearly as elite as he seems to think. Plenty of the students were from middle-middle class families with incomes that were only "comfortable" and no illustrious ancestors. A significant percentage of my classmates' tuitions were paid for with partial scholarships.
I guess it's a romantic idea, these exclusive boarding schools where the younger generation of the ruling class hobnobs and makes connections for future use. It might have been true in the age of English boarding schools where most of the students had titles and there was no hot water, but no more!
