Yao's comeback concerns
By Adrian Wojnarowski
Thursday, Feb 22, 2007 11:21 pm EST
Houston Rockets coach Jeff Van Gundy has always insisted that Yao Ming's life in the NBA would be much easier if maybe the center was perhaps five or six inches shorter because the seven feet, six inches of length deliver a beating to Yao's lower body.
Yao is working to rehabilitate a fractured right leg for an anticipated mid-March return, and on Thursday, Van Gundy confessed to concerns with the process.
"It's not a smooth thing," Van Gundy said by phone. "He's got to wear a knee brace and it's giving him a little problem running. If it affects how he's running, we're worried it will lead to other problems.
"All his injuries have had to do with the lower legs and each in itself is no big deal – an ankle, a toe – but it is a problem when they multiply. The only thing that can derail this guy is health. That's the only thing that can get in his way."
The Rockets have been far from the sub-.500 team that most expected once Yao went down in late December. They've gone 18-8 without Yao, leaving themselves within two games of San Antonio for the third seed in the West.
"The question is can we keep it going with Yao, or drop back like people thought we would without him?" Van Gundy said.

Let Yao rest as much as he needs! T-Mac is carrying the load so there is no need to panic!

The Rockets, and specifically Mutombo are playing well enough that they can afford to ease Yao back, come March. They'll have more than enough time to pass Utah and/or San Antonio before the end of the season, which is what they need to do to have home court advantage...

With Yao back of course its to the top. That's an additional 26+ pts, 8 + boards. T-mac has a center who can take the pressure off him and who he can feed all day. The only question I have is defense and foul troubles. But now we know we have a back up center in Dikembe! Rockets all the way ladies and gents!

The Houston Rockets are a solid team without Yao and an even better one with him (Obviously). Mutumbo has proven he can help the Rockets at the center position and give them a good contributor so I think the rockets should give Yao as much rest as he can get, and ease him into the lineup alittle later in the season.

The only problem with Houston becoming an elite team is that thier superstars are always injured. Once Yao gets back they are going to be very dangerous but can both McGrady and Yao be healty enough to go far into the playoffs?

im definitely a rockets fan but we may never know what will happen if yao comes back. things would do well but certainly there would be possible negative results, nevertheless having yao back would give us rockets fans a chance to celebratew. we love to welcome him back we need him but we may never know what will happen to our team. lets just keep our fingers crossed....
