战胜命运--伟大男低中音Thomas Quasthoff

他的生涯是个令人动容的故事。
他母亲在怀孕时服的治疗妊娠反应的药对胎儿发育造成极度损害，肢骨体严重的晶体化。他的上、下肢只有正常的一小节。成年後他身高四尺，只有七个手指。第一次看到他的形象的无不为此触动。
他成长于一个特殊教育的机构，饱受讥讽和孤独。他在13岁时开始学声乐。但是当时的音乐学院都拒绝了他，因为声乐系都要学钢琴。当时他很沮丧，只能通过私人声乐课继续。以后他说被拒时他觉得命运很残酷，他得为不是由他可控制的一个医疗错误而惩罚；可欣的是私人课的教授方式使他更能融入音乐学习，这个因祸得福而来的机会使他养成更强的乐感。
为了未来能独立生存，他又修了几年法律课，但是后来逐渐厌倦。放弃律师生涯后，他就在银行里做出纳。后来因他优秀的嗓音和文科底子，他找到了一个电台播音的工作。
他的歌唱技能在三十岁后才被重视。从那时开始，他童年的梦逐渐得已实现。他极洪亮的美声再加上超众的技术使其他音乐家和听众渐渐接受他的残疾，而只注意他的音乐表现能力。大的录音公司也开始和他签约，在以后十几年中，他得了很多大奖，包括三次Grammy Award。作为歌唱家，他擅长德奥浪漫派的歌曲（lied），被视为最伟大的lieder 之一。近年来他涉足于jazz和blue，也取得了广泛的认可。
他的残疾可对他来说并不是人生的绝境，而是个挑战。他自己这样说："For me, my disability is a fact and not a problem. I'm not living the life of a disabled person. For sure, I have to handle some things differently from other people. But it's not so different from the life of someone who is not disabled. In any case, who is really not disabled? I am in the lucky position that everyone can see it. But if you are never happy, if you are only concerned about money or success, this is in my opinion also a kind of disability."
