Acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang will perform at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 21, as part of the 2003-2004 Shriver Hall Concert Series in Shriver Hall Auditorium on The Johns Hopkins University's Homewood campus, 3400 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.
Born in 1982 in Shenyang, China, Lang Lang is already a renowned performer. He is the first Chinese pianist to be engaged by the Berlin Philharmonic and all "Big Five" American orchestras — the New York Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, the Chicago Symphony, and The Cleveland Orchestra. At 3, he began taking piano lessons. At 5, he won the Shenyang Piano Competition and played his first public recital. At 9, he entered Beijing's Central Music Conservatory. At 11, he won the outstanding artistic performance award at the Fourth International Young Pianists Competition in Germany. At 13, he played the complete Chopin "24 Etudes" at Beijing Concert Hall and won first prize at the Tchaikovsky International Young Musicians' Competition in Japan, where he performed the Chopin "Concerto No. 2" with the Moscow Philharmonic. At 14, he was a featured soloist at the China National Symphony's inaugural concert, attended by President Jiang Ze-Min. The following year he began studies with Gary Graffman at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia.
Lang Lang's big break came in 1999 at the age of 17 when he filled in at the last minute for Andr‚ Watts at the Ravinia Festival's "Gala of the Century," playing the Tchaikovsky piano concerto with the Chicago Symphony. The fateful substitution precipitated some landmark performances for Lang Lang, including his sold-out Carnegie Hall debut, a performance in Bejing's Great Hall of the People with the Philadelphia Orchestra on its 100th anniversary tour, and a popular BBC "Proms" debut, prompting The Times of London's critic to write: "Lang Lang took a sold-out Albert Hall by storm. .This could well be history in the making." Lang's Shriver Hall Concert Series program will include Schumann's "Variations on the name 'Abegg' for Piano in F Major, Op. 1," Haydn's "Piano Sonata in C Major, Hob. XVI/50," Chopin's "Andante Spianato et Grande polonaise brillante in E-flat, Op. 22" and "Nocturne in D-flat Major, Op. 27 No. 2," Tan Dun's "Eight Memories in Watercolor, Op. 1," and Liszt's "R‚miniscences de Don Juan" [based on Mozart's "Don Giovanni"], S. 418." At 4:30 p.m. in the Shriver Hall Clipper Room, Eileen Soskin, associate dean for academic affairs at the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University will deliver a pre-concert lecture. Upcoming performances in the concert series are the contemporary ensemble Continuum on April 4 and Eroica Trio on May 2.
