Why I Paint

(2006-09-05 22:02:28) 下一个

“As to the question of why I paint, it is something I have struggled with for many years;
But I am no closer to answering that question than the first time I asked it.
I do know that painting is just something I must do.
The great feedback I have ever received have of course come from  teachers, art critics, family members, contemporaries and friends.
Those, delighted me and ecnouraged me in many ways, but, after a while, I found myself take it for granted (this is not forgivable).
This past summer, I was heading to an exhibit, but my transportor had made a mistake with the truck load, he forgot to bring one of the paintings that was supposed to be at the exhibit, and it was a major piece. Two hours before the show, I had no way to find someone who had a big enough truck with insurance together with the right kind of packing material. So I decided to hand carry that painting (it is a 125" x 73") myself walking 28 blocks all the way from 57th St. to Chelsea. It was around 4 pm in the afternoon, everyone saw me, but as typical newyorkers would behave, nobody approached me except one - when I got closer to 27th St and 7th Ave,  a person came after me and said, “ I don’t know a lot about art, but that painting is so strong it makes me want to cry.”
.......

If I can manage to somehow evoke that kind of emotional gut reaction from people whether it be anger, sadness, or delight in all my work, then I have really found something.”

金笔 回复 悄悄话 Walking up from 27th to 57th Street on 7th Ave, next to Broadway! It is probably the most commercialized blocks in Manhattan besides Park Ave. What a great walk! I almost can picture you now, what a great walk on 7th Av, LOL!

I think some people want to paint, just like some want to write, to relieve the urgency to express themselves. Maybe I am wrong but people who can paint are certainly gifted.

Taking care yourself and your gifted talent, and thank you for your comment on my post!
一苇渡江的行者 回复 悄悄话 MMM:

1. I couldn't see the paintings you posted. So you have already "evoked that kind of emotional gut reaction from" poor me (imagine the frustration, anger and etc.). But I can visualize/envision and etc.

2. God must love you very much as he has graciously gifted you with this talent. Human beings learnt to paint before they developed langugages. We speak many languages but we paint the same. We can all read your heart from your fine art.

3. If I were the guy you met at 27th street and 7th Avenue, I would have said the same thing, AND, AND, I would have carried the piece for you.
