Table 3.B First Use of the Divine Name "Yahweh" in the Sources

This table lists the first time the divine name Yahweh is used in the three sources of the Tetrateuch. Remember that LORD represents Yahweh in the Hebrew text.

Yahwist	Genesis 4:26	To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time men began to call upon the name of the LORD.
Elohist	Exodus 3:14-15	God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM." And he said, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" 15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the people of Israel, 'The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you': this is my name for ever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations.
Priestly	Exodus 6:2-3	And God said to Moses, "I am the LORD. 3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.
