波士顿拉丁学校拍卖捐赠行动
Boston Latin School (BLS) Home and School Association (an organization held by alumni and parents) host an auction every November. This is one of many kinds of fundraising activities conducted by BLS community. The proceeds of this auction go to BLS senior scholarship. The goal of this fund raising event is to make sure every senior leaves BLS with some sort of scholarship as a goodbye present from BLS community.
Though the care and effort that alumni and parents offer to school cannot be measured by money, the school receives about twenty to forty thousand dollars of donation through auction every year. Many alumni and parents donate their merchandise, food, neighborhood basket, time, services (e.g. tutoring, cooking classes), and talent to this event. At the same time, many alumni and parents pay money to buy the donation.
If you can find something you like, you need, and the price is at the market value that is the great. But some people buy things at school auction not because of the true value of a merchandise (e.g. $2 for a cookie). In some case, one may find the final bit of certain goods that is more expansive than you can find in department store, but you still buy it. Some people may be buying things not necessarily needed, but you go ahead to buy it anyways. There is a supportive mind behind the action. Part of alumni and parents make the donation to the auction that provides some vehicles for others to make donation. Another part of alumni and parents use the vehicles to donate their money to school. The two parts of action together make the success of an auction. This is what I called "generosity"!
The Friends of Chinese Culture at BLS (FCC) is a Chinese parent association. It has been a major contributor to this event for the past three years. The restaurant size Chinese food made by FCC parents for the auction has always been a big hit. Many people come to the auction with empty stomach. The delicious Chinese food not only can satisfy their taste bot, but gives them an avenue to sent money to their child’s school.
