Four groups in America were polled about their impressions of China -
1. General Public
2. Opinion Leaders
3. Congressional Staff
4. Business Leaders
One question they were asked is
Should Access to US Markets be linked to China's Human Rights Record?
Though divided on whehter or not China's human rights record has improved or gotten
worse, there is no division on this answer.
Two Thirds or more of all four groups think there should be a connection.
Business leaders (65%) wanted to know the details of violations after the business deal
was signed.
Opinion leaders (66%), the general public (70%) and Congress (77%)...tell China
to clean up their act or they won't do business. Afterwards they put down their paper
with headlines - CHINA TRADE DEFICIT CONTINUES TO GROW.
Somebody tell me, why do Americans continue to do business when they say they shouldn't?
Plus they might think, "Even if I don't do business
with China, some will, and they will take my place."
