这是民谣诗人Jim Croce在70年代的遗作。
创作背景源于Jim穷困潦倒的时候打电话给爱妻，总是看到好多士兵在排队打电话，需要通过接线生转拨。每个人的脸上都有着不一样的表情，可是都惧怕听到类似"Dear John"的消息。Dear John是美国一首悲情老歌，歌词大意是男子远征战场，最后女友寄来了分手的信，信的开头就是Dear John。Jim于是把这个场景写进了这首名曲。
Operator是接线生的意思，每个打电话的人都希望他能给自己带来好消息。可是爱情总是那么弱不禁风，在遥远的电话那头，总会有无尽的叹息和悔恨。Jim在处理歌词的时候，却相当的平静和理智，仿佛伤痛仅仅擦身而过，或者，那也是别人的事，而他只是在叙述。
“亲爱的，我电话过来，只是告诉你，我现在过的很好”。
