"饿死人"在医学上是"死于营养不良"。晚期营养不良的病人主要表现为严重消瘦，重要脏器，如心，肝，肾，肺的功能受损，免疫功能的低下等。晚期营养不良的病人往往并不是死于"饥饿"，而是因为长期营养不良导致心功能衰竭，或肝肾功能衰竭，或免疫功能衰竭继发感染等而死亡。
