《圣诞节的12天》是脍炙人口的圣诞歌曲，歌词中表面是讲圣诞节的十二天里要做的事，其实有极为深远的寓意。
歌曲乍听之下，跟信仰完全不相干，只是在讲十二天里要为圣诞节准备的十二种礼物，其实，这十二种礼物暗示了圣经中十二种信仰上的含义。
《圣诞节的12天》（英文名《The Twelve Days Of Christmas》），是一首脍炙人口的圣诞歌曲。歌中唱道∶“在圣诞节的第一天，我的真爱送我一只站在梨树上的鹧鸪鸟；在圣诞节的第二天，我的真爱送我两只斑鸠、一只站在梨树上的鹧鸪鸟；在圣诞节的第三天，我的真爱送我三只法国母鸡、两只斑鸠、一只站在梨树上的鹧鸪鸟……”礼物如此重重迭迭地送到圣诞节的第12天。
这张莫名其妙的礼物单子如何能赢得美人的欢心令人费解，却赢得了世人的喜爱，从16世纪传诵至今。到了1984年，一个美国金融机构的首席经济学家突然悟出了其中的奥秘，开始计算购买这些礼物的费用，并逐年比较，于是形成幽默的“圣诞物价指数”CPI（Christmas Price Index）。

歌中“真爱”购买礼物的总花费，在2011年为101,119.34美元，比2010年增长了3.5%。而1984年，总额只是61,318.94美元。这张礼物单子囊括了珠宝业、服务业、宠物店等多个行业。从近28年来的“圣诞物价指数”起伏中，可以一览美国经济结构的大变动，即服务价格的上涨幅度，远远超过了商品价格的上涨幅度。比如9位舞女的一场演出费用，已增长300%。
多年来“圣诞物价指数”涨涨落落，竟然与美国劳工部统计的“消费者物价指数”CPI（Customer Price Index）保持一致，于是成了衡量美国通货膨胀的绝妙指数。
如果探索这首曲子的由来，更令人称惊。16世纪的英国，天主教是“非法”的，天主教徒不能公开将信仰传给自己的下一代，于是他们编了这首歌，每一件礼物都寓意深刻∶
歌中的真爱就是上帝，他将美好的礼物赐给信徒——鹧鸪鸟（母鸟通常为保护小鸟引开敌人、牺牲自己）象征上帝的儿子耶稣，梨树意指十字架。2只斑鸠，象徵旧约和新约。3只法国母鸡，代表信、望、爱三德。4只唱歌的鸟儿，指的是四福音书。5只金戒指，象征摩西五经。6只生蛋的鹅，代表上帝用六日创世。7只戏水的天鹅，象征圣徒的七种恩赐。8位挤奶的女孩，代表的是登山宝训的八福。9位跳舞的女郎，象征圣灵所结的九个果子。10位跳跃的绅士，代表十戒。11位吹笛手，代表跟从耶稣到底的十一位门徒。12位击鼓手，指的是天主教徒信经十二条。
有谁会想到，听起来滑稽绕口的圣诞歌，居然起源于这样神圣的使命。
当年的信仰之歌，摇身变为现代的物价指数之歌，那些天主教徒的在天之灵，恐怕也会哈哈一笑。
