When the Life Knocks You Down, You Have to Get up, Shake the Dust and Move ON

Reviewing my life journey, it is like an obstacle race, I always have to go crossing one obstacle after another to get to where God plans for me. God closes a door and will open a window. The key points are that you have to be brave, hold on and be patient. If something means to happen to you, it will happen at the right time and for the best reason. One typical case I had experienced can evidence those points.

On a sunny day, I was extremely happy to know that I was all set to begin in my new position. It is hard to use any words to describe how excited I was when reading the Welcome to Missouri University S&T! shown in my job offer letter. After experiencing the long-term disability, I lost my health and had to give up my loved job. It forced me to decide: I could focus on what I have lost or what I still remained. I chose the latter.

I started to work on what I was able to do at home. I tried my best to turn my career from a mechanical engineer to a researcher of scientific studies, an author of publications and a reviewer of academic articles. I really benefited from being home alone. Time alone cleared my mind and let me slow down. It made me become more focused and independent. Home alone allowed me to explore possibilities of my life and triggered my creativity. It improved my health and let me gain self-confidence and eventually turned my potential into a new career.

One day, when I sent an email to an editor but the email went to the mailbox of my ex-professor. I had worked as a postdoctoral research fellow with his team for 5.5 years. He replied to my email and asked about my situation. I told him my health has improved a lot and asked him about any possibility to provide me with a project, which could be worked from my home. I was eager to contribute my knowledge to this world. He did not hesitate to tell me he was going to offer me a part time job.

Soon, my dream came true, and I had an academic job. After leaving Missouri University S&T almost two decades ago, I came back and joined the research team again. Thank God for the job offer. He closed a large door and opened a small window for me. Thanks to all people for the efficient service, help, guidance and support. I really appreciated their assistance and support. Thanks to America! This country provides special protection for the vulnerable groups to share equal rights to live and work.
