I have read many articles on the topic of returning to
China to starta business. I have been thinking about doing the same, here are some ofmy random thoughts on this topic.
What is the motive? The most direct motive is related to fame and fortune(名,利) On the fame side, you get recognition and respect from your friends/relatives back in China, and in some cases, you can gain respects that you would not be able to attain elsewhere. This is,perhaps, the strongest motivating factor. You would feel a sense of accomplishment much faster than you would in a foreign country. I compare human motivation to the laws of physics, we often take the path of least resistance. This is not to say that going back to China iseasy. It is not. Many also see opportunities to make easy cash in China, ofcourse, everyone knows this is not the case. Why then do we still try tostart down a path that we know is very risky? I parallel this to the human instinct to gamble, and take the easier path to success. Many casinos in the U.S.have sections dedicated to the Asian customers. In the gambling industry,Asians are one of the most fanatic gamblers. This same gambling spirit istranscending to the flood of entrepreneurs heading back to China. If the motivating factors were not fame and fortune but pure altruism, then I believe you would be successful no matter what. In your mind, you want tocontribute and help improve the society in China in anyway you can. No matter how little change that you can contribute, that satisfaction of knowing you have made a difference is immense. This is the mentality that I think one should take going back to China.
I have many opinions on other topics, but I’ll save them for another time. This is my first post, I’m not sure if anyone will even read this. If you did read this, thank you for taking the time, and I hope I have intrigued a few thoughts in you.
