3.5.6 尘香当官 Dust-Scent as an Official
舜帝离开后不久，尘香就接到了县里发来的舜禹行宫改造工程投标邀请。公司经理就根据发下来的设计写出了预算项目清单，交给尘香和尘凡看。这哥俩看不懂，就同意了。尘香就把预算项目的清单交给了做预算的公司。公司经理看过预算公司做的预算后，什么也没说，就签字了。在开标的前一天晚上，公司经理拿出了一份文档，说那是大禹被捕前留给他的，是以前舜禹行宫竣工验收的备用档案，交代他俩明天带着这文件去参加开标会。
这哥俩打开一看，乐了，发现里面有一份由大禹和这位公司经理做的地质勘查报告。报告中大禹在这块地上均匀分布式地挖过40个深坑。尘凡对哥哥说： “我看这份文件对咱俩挖洞有用，明天开标用不着。但我觉得还是把它备份下来，以免明天这些文件都被没收了。”
Shortly after Emperor Shun left, Dust-Scent received an invitation from the county to bid for the renovation of the Shun Yu Migration Palace. The company manager wrote a list of budget items based on the design sent down and gave it to Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal to read. The two brothers couldn't understand it, so they agreed. Dust-Scent gave the list of budget items to the company that made the budget. After the company manager looked at the budget made by the budget company, he signed it without saying anything. The night before the bid opening, the company manager took out a document and said that it was left to him by White-King Yu before he was arrested. It was a backup file for the completion acceptance of the Shun Yu Migration Palace. He told them to bring this document to the bid opening meeting tomorrow.
The two brothers opened it and were delighted to find a geological survey report made by White-King Yu and the company manager. The report showed that White-King Yu had dug 40 deep pits evenly distributed on the land. Dust-Mortal said to his brother: "I think this document is useful for us to dig holes, it is not needed for the bid opening tomorrow. But I think it is better to back it up in case all these documents are confiscated tomorrow."
尘香回答：“那我把雷峰塔地基的施工验收报告抄下来吧！”
第二天开标会上，宣布报价时，尘香的报价低，排在了第三位。招标方要求尘凡补充说明几项工程没做预算的原因。尘香就把他公司经理提供的材料交给招标商。一段时间后，县政府通知尘香，他的公司中标了。
Dust-Scent replied: "Then I will copy down the construction acceptance report of the Leifeng Pagoda foundation!"
At the bid opening meeting the next day, when the bids were announced, Dust-Incense's bid was low and ranked third. The tenderer asked Dust-Mortal to explain why several projects were not budgeted. Dust-Scent handed the materials provided by his company manager to the tenderer. After a while, the county government notified Dust-Scent that his company had won the bid.

尘香雇了两个采购员伙同政府派来的三个官员一起去采购木材。他发现这三个政府官员是采购专家，在木材商厂家直接做实验，就天天请他们喝酒吃肉。事后，三个政府官员和他自己雇佣的两个采购员都向木材商索要回扣。三千两银子花出去之后，尘香担心了，对三个政府官员说：“工地还没开工呢，这么多的钱就花出去了。如果亏损了，我赔不起啊！”
三个政府官员笑着回答：“小兄弟！你的这个工程不一样，计料不计工。等咱到家之后，你就已经赚了300两银子的利润了。做这个工程只赚不赔！”
Dust-Scent hired two purchasers to go with three government officials to purchase timber. He found out that the three government officials were purchasing experts who did experiments directly at the timber manufacturer, so he invited them to drink and eat meat every day. Afterwards, the three government officials and the two purchasers he hired asked for kickbacks from the timber manufacturer. After spending three thousand taels of silver, Dust-Scent was worried and said to the three government officials: "The construction site hasn't started yet, and so much money has been spent. If there is a loss, I can't afford it!"
The three government officials smiled and replied: "Little brother! Your project is different. It only counts materials but not labor. When we get home, you will have made a profit of 300 taels of silver. This project is profitable and not loss-making!"
回到家之后，尘香问公司经理：“那三个政府官员说的是真话吗？”
经理回答：“这个工程的施工已经依照成熟的施工步骤，分解成了许多具体项目。如果按照施工进度表和预算逐步实施，认真做好每一项工作，亏损的可能性很小。”
尘香拿出了300两银子的利润分给了三个政府官员，要跟他们合作：把这工程15%利润的一半分给他们，由他们三个负责采购工作。那三个政府官员回答：“我们不占你的便宜；你把利润的三分之一给我们就够了！”
尘香回答：“我愿意分给你们一半利润！”
After returning home, Dust-Scent asked the company manager, “Are those three government officials telling the truth?”
The manager replied, “The construction of this project has been broken down into many specific projects in accordance with proven construction procedures. If it is implemented step by step in accordance with the construction schedule and budget, and every job is done carefully, the possibility of loss is very small.”
Dust-Scent took out 300 taels of silver profit and divided it among three government officials to cooperate with them: half of the 15% profit of this project would be divided among them, and the three of them would oversee the procurement work. The three government officials replied, “We won't take advantage of you; it's enough for you to give us one-third of the profit!”
Dust-Scent replied, “I'm willing to share half of the profits!”
这三个政府官员私下讨论了一会儿关于如何掌握尘香犯罪的证据，来制约他。他们回来说：“我们为你在政府里办件事后，咱们的合作协议就生效了！”
尘香回答：“我也想当官！”
几天后，那三个政府官员来找尘香，说：“咱们县政府有三十多位官，其中只有九位是中华帝国的公务员。你要当公务员我们办不了。其它的县政府雇来的工作人员，也有一部分是官。如果你想当这种不是帝国政府注册的官员，我们可以帮忙。”
尘香回答：“是官就行！”
These three government officials discussed privately for a while about how to get hold of evidence of Dust-Incense's crimes to restrain him. They came back and said, “After we do something for you in the government, our cooperation agreement will come into effect!”
Dust-Scent replied, “I want to be a government official too!”
A few days later, those three government officials came to Dust-Scent and said, “There are more than thirty officials in our county government, and only nine of them are civil servants of Chinese Empire. We can't do it if you want to be a civil servant. Some of the other staff hired by the county government are also officials. If you want to be this kind of official who is not registered with the Imperial government, we can help.”
Dust-Scent replied, “Just be an official!”
那三个政府官员立刻高兴了，说：“现在档案库缺一位保管员。这个工作的优点是你若不去上班，你可以把档案库的钥匙挂在县长秘书的抽屉上。我们觉得这工作挺合适你，因为你时常要回来照顾这个工地。”
尘香回答：“仓库不漏雨，我就没事。这个工作挺好，我想干，但这个工作是官吗？”
三个帝国政府的公务员立刻回答：“这工作当然是官。是不是官你得看俸禄的高低。档案库保管员的薪水是非国家公务员的官中，薪水比较高的。如果你接受了这份工作，咱们合伙干这舜禹行宫整修工程的合同立刻生效。”
尘香回答：“好！我明天早晨去县政府上班！”
The three government officials were immediately pleased and said, “There is a shortage of a custodian for the archives. The advantage of this job is that if you don't go to work, you can have the key to the archive hanging on the drawer of the governor's secretary. We think this job is quite suitable for you because you must come back from time to time to take care of this site.”
Dust-Scent replied, “I'll be fine if the warehouse doesn't leak. This job is quite good, and I want to do it, but is this job official?”
Three civil servants of the Imperial Government immediately replied, “Of course this job is official. Whether it is an official or not you have to see how high the salary is. The salary of an archivist is one of the higher salaries among the non-state civil servants. If you accept this job, the contract for our partnership in the refurbishment of Shun Yu's palace will take effect immediately.”
Dust-Scent replied, “Good! I'll go to work at the county government tomorrow morning!”
3.5.6-3 轮回孽槃 Cycling Karma Base
第二天早晨，尘香就来到县政府报到了。那三个办理采购的公务员把他介绍给了县长的秘书。秘书领着尘香到档案库里给他介绍档案的编码，然后就把档案室的钥匙交给了他。尘香就自己检查档案室的屋顶，发现了三块瓦片裂了。他就自己去建材市场买了三块瓦把屋顶的漏雨处补好了。然后就坐在县衙门的门口和人唠嗑。他在打听如何制作假身份证。
尘香几天就听明白了档案室的秘密。原来档案室里的户籍和个人历史记录是根据皇历（即万年历）的原理编码的。这些编码是从以前的记录算出来的。每一个记录都会有涟漪似的扩散效应。比如一个人的出生记录会计入档案（孽槃）；几年后他的数据就会进入周围49个县的孽槃。这样就没人能够造出从出生开始的假身份，因为更改涅盘的工作量大，造出一个18岁的年轻人要更改周围49县，甚至多个州的孽槃。这个档案的机制已经在尧帝登基时全国联网了，即已经形成了一个中华帝国大孽槃。
The next morning, Dust-Scent reported to the county government. The three civil servants who handled the procurement introduced him to the secretary of the prefect. The secretary led Dust-Scent to the archives and introduced him to the coding of the archives and then handed him the key to the archives room. Dust-Scent then checked the roof of the archive room himself and found three tiles cracked. He then went to the building materials market by himself and bought three tiles to patch up the leaks in the roof. Then he sat at the door of the county courthouse and chattered with someone. He was inquiring about how to make fake ID cards.
Dust-Scent heard the secrets of the archive room in a few days. It turned out that the civil and personal history records in the archive room were coded according to the principles of the White-King calendar (i.e., the almanac). These codes were calculated from previous records. Each record has a ripple-like spreading effect. For example, a person's birth record would be counted in the archives (Karma Base); after a few years his data would go into the Karma Base of the surrounding 49 counties. This way no one can create a false identity from birth, because the amount of work involved in changing the Karma Base is so great that creating an 18-year-old would require changing the Karma Base of the surrounding 49 counties, or even multiple states. The mechanism of this archive was already connected nationwide when White-King Yao ascended the throne, i.e., a great Chinese Imperial Karma Base had been created.
3.5.7 龙王经 Dragon King Sutra
舜禹行宫的整修工作开始了，行宫就对外开放了。很多人来行宫参观。据说在这座行宫落成后直到今天，约六千四百年间，只有20%的中国人没来参观过这座行宫。原因是它们生活在地狱里，那里是没福的地方。其它80%的华人至少来过一次，许多人来过多次，但就是不说。
人们开始检查认证这座由旧木头盖成的新房还能用多少年？有人说15年，有人说10年。尘香和尘凡也参加了猜测，认为能住20年。他俩问建筑公司经理。经理回答： “我能住30年，你们哥俩能住20年，皇帝住7年。”
尘凡问：“他们只住7年，那我们用什么标准来修建这皇宫？”
公司经理回答：“即便是皇帝只在这里住一个月，我们也当成他们要住100年。”
The renovation of Migration Palace of Shun and Yu began, and it was opened to the public. Many people came to visit the palace. It is said that in the six thousand four hundred years since the palace was built until today, only 20% of the Chinese have not visited the palace. The reason is that they live in hell, where there is no fortune. The other 80% of the Chinese have been there at least once, and many have been there many times, but they just don't talk about it.
People began to check and certify how long this new house made of old wood could last. Some said 15 years, others said 10 years. Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal also speculated that it could last 20 years. They asked the manager of the construction company.
The manager replied: "I can live here for 30 years, you two brothers can live here for 20 years, and the emperor can live here for 7 years."
Dust-Mortal asked: "They only live here for 7 years, so what standard do we use to build this palace?"
The company manager replied: "Even if the emperor only lives here for a month, we will treat it as if they will live here for 100 years."
3.5.7-2
这次行宫改造的主要工程项目是，一，为了增加采光，给行宫开几个天窗，附加给各个房间装上天棚；二，为了增加房间里空气的流动性，给行宫建立通风系统。通风系统是由一幢旱烟囱及与之相连的排气通道和进气通道构成的。其中旱烟囱，又名雷峰塔，是耗工耗时的主体项目。拆除了位于雷峰塔底座的四个洗浴间之后，设计院派来了实地考察的人。
设计院的代表看了以前大禹留下来的地基验收报告和雷峰塔的地基现状后说；“我们认可以前的地基验收报告；但是那是五年前的竣工报告。我们有必要挖三个测试坑，看看有没有变化。然后做几个抗压测试。这些实验我们都不收钱。”建筑公司经理和政府派来的三个施工监理都同意了。
The main projects of the palace renovation this time are: first, to increase the lighting, open several skylights in the palace and install ceilings in each room; second, to increase the air flow in the rooms, build a ventilation system for the palace. The ventilation system is composed of a dry chimney and the exhaust and intake channels connected to it. Among them, the dry chimney, also known as Leifeng Pagoda, is the main project that consumes labor and time. After dismantling the four bathrooms at the base of Leifeng Pagoda, the design institute sent people to conduct on-site inspections.
After looking at the foundation acceptance report left by Dayu and the status of the Leifeng Pagoda's foundation, the representative of the design institute said, "We recognize the previous foundation acceptance report, but that was the completion report five years ago. We need to dig three test pits to see if there are any changes. Then do some compression tests. We don't charge for these experiments." The construction company manager and the three construction supervisors sent by the government all agreed.
在做实验的几天里，尘香天天请设计院的代表喝酒吃肉。代表离开工地的这天，尘香请他喝茅台酒。设计院的代表笑着问：“有什么事？你就直说吧！若不然这茅台酒我可不敢喝。”
沉香说：“我想把通风系统的进气道口向北移到院墙边。这样不但美观，还可以把进气口的房子建得长些来减少被投毒的风险。”
During the days of the experiment, Dust-Scent treated the design institute representative to alcohol and meat every day. On the day the representative left the construction site, Dust-Scent treated him to Maotai alcohol. The design institute representative smiled and asked: "What's the matter? Just tell me! Otherwise, I dare not drink this Maotai alcohol."
Dust-Scent said: "I want to move the air intake of the ventilation system to the north, next to the courtyard wall. This will not only look good but also allow the air intake house to be built longer to reduce the risk of poisoning."
设计院的代表回答：“跟帝王家做买卖有个毛病，常更改设计；所以我的原设计就是像你说的那样。这样吧，下次我再来的时候，给你带来一份原设计的草图。说是草图，实际就是比设计图纸做的看起来茅草些。上面写着我的烟囱高度和通风道长度计算公式，和计算过程。你的那位经理或者你弟弟尘凡一看就懂。他们就可以用那草图作为施工的依据。雷峰塔的结构不用改。你若用你说的进气道长度，雷峰塔的原设计高度还有一米的多余。”
The representative of the design institute replied, "There is a problem with doing business with the emperor, the design is often changed; so, my original design is just like what you said. How about this, next time I come, I will bring you a sketch of the original design. It is called a sketch, but it is a rougher design than the design drawing. It contains my calculation formula for the height of the chimney and the length of the ventilation duct, as well as the calculation process. Your manager or your brother Dust-Mortal will understand it briefly. They can use the sketch as the basis for construction. The structure of Leifeng Pagoda does not need to be changed. If you use the intake duct length you mentioned, the original design height of Leifeng Pagoda will still have one meter extra."
沉香回答：“谢谢了！那我把20两银子作为礼物送给你！”
设计院的代表说：“谢谢了！那我可以把我的名字签在草图上面。我不能把我们公司的印章盖在上面。那样，你的花费就大了；我也违反了我们公司的规定。”
随后，尘香和尘凡就研究了如何更改施工进度表，来实现他俩挖洞进入舜帝行宫的计划。
Dust-Scent replied: "Thank you! Then I will give you 20 taels of silver as a gift!"
The representative of the design institute said: "Thank you! Then I can sign my name on the sketch. I cannot put our company seal on it. That way, your cost will be high, and I will also violate our company's regulations."
Afterwards, Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal studied how to change the construction schedule to realize their plan to dig a hole into Emperor Shun's palace.
3.5.7-3
一天尘香正在和捕快“临冲”和 “路引”在县政府的门前唠嗑，一个农村老大爷进了县政府。临冲调侃地对尘香说：“你舅舅来了！”
尘香看了舅舅一眼，回答：“他来干嘛？”
路引回答：“他是来办假身份证的。”
尘香不屑地回答：“他有假身份证也没什么地方可去！”
One day, Dust-Scent was chatting with the constable Before-Charging and Road-Leader in front of the county government, when an old man from the countryside entered the county government. Before-Charging said to Dust-Scent jokingly, "Your uncle is here!"
Dust-Scent glanced at his uncle and replied, "What is he doing here?"
Road-Leader replied, "He is here to get a fake ID."
Dust-Scent replied disdainfully, "He has nowhere to go with a fake ID!"
路引说：“我听说，你妈家的祖坟本来不在湖北。十年前，你的外祖母，西王母，把祖坟从浙江迁到了湖北。你舅舅在浙江时就有很多生意，很有钱。他来到这儿之后，他的生意扩展到了江苏，山东和河北。”
这时舅舅，县长，和县长秘书从县政府里走出来了。舅舅高兴地招呼沉香说：“县长请我吃饭，走！你跟舅舅一起去！”
尘香没回答。临冲在他的耳边小声说：“跟县长一起吃饭的机会难得呀！” 尘香觉着临冲的话有道理，跟在了他们三人的后面。
Road-Leader said, "I heard that your mother's ancestral grave was not originally in Hubei. Ten years ago, your grandmother, King Mother of the West, moved the ancestral grave from Zhejiang to Hubei. When your uncle was in Zhejiang, he had a lot of business and was very rich. After he came here, his business expanded to Jiangsu, Shandong and Hebei."
At this time, Uncle, the county prefect, and the county prefect's secretary walked out of the county government. Uncle happily greeted Dust-Scent and said, "The county prefect invited me to feast, let's go! You go with your uncle!"
Dust-Scent did not answer. Before-Charging whispered in his ear, "It's a rare opportunity to have feast with the county prefect!" Dust-Scent felt that Before-Charging's words made sense and followed the three of them.
3.5.7-4 一辈子没做过对不起父母的事 I have never done anything to let my parents down in my life.
在开始吃饭前，县长郑重地对舅舅致谢：“我代表县委，县政府，和全县的公民感谢您在我们这里住了十年！您此次回老家都打算做些什么？”
Before the meal began, the county chief solemnly thanked Uncle: "On behalf of the county party committee, the county government, and all the citizens of the county, I would like to thank you for living here for ten years! What do you plan to do when you return to your hometown this time?"
舅舅回答：“我一辈子没做过对不起我父亲（即玉皇大帝）和我母亲（即王母娘娘）的事。自从我母亲将女娲家族的祖坟迁到了湖北，我就没离开过这县的地域一次。这次回废都杭州，我要先去以前的鲵丸宫，拜祭我的母亲西王母，和我的外祖母蔻珠。然后，我去找几个和我一起长大的老朋友。第二个我要去的地方是位于河南的废都永安，去拜祭我的父亲和我的爷爷元始天尊（即太昊）。在那之后，我去嵩山少林寺，去拜见我的大伯父靖王武大郎和大伯母石矶娘娘潘金莲。在那之后，我去山东，那里有我许多过去的生意上的朋友。”
Uncle replied, "I have never done anything to let my father (Turquoise Emperor) and my mother (King-Mother of the West) down in my life. Ever since my mother moved the ancestral tomb of Nuwa family to Hubei, I have never left this county. This time when I return to the abandoned capital of Hangzhou, I will first go to the former Salamander Bolus Palace to pay homage to my mother, King Mother of the West, and my grandmother, Kou’zhu. Then, I will go to see some old friends who grew up with me. The second place I will go to is the abandoned capital of Yong'an in Henan, to pay homage to my father and my grandfather Original Sky Honor (Taihao). After that, I will go to the Shaolin Temple in Songshan to pay homage to my great uncle, King Jing, Martial Big Wolf, and my great aunt, Queen Stone Jetty, Goldthread Pan. After that, I will go to Shandong, where I have many of my old business friends."
县长说：“您在三年之内回来这里一次就行！”
舅舅回答：“用不了三年！我已经习惯这里的生活了。旅游完我说过的那三十几个地方，我就回来这里养老。”
县长庄重地对秘书说：“那这事就由你来办吧！”他转脸对舅舅说：“我现在还在工作。我去付账，然后就回办公室了。你们慢慢聊！”
The county prefect, "You just need to come back here once within three years!"
Uncle replied, "It won't take three years! I'm used to life here. After I travel to thirty or so places, I mentioned, I'll come back here to retire."
The county chief solemnly said to his secretary, "Then you can do it!" He turned to Uncle and said, "I'm still working. I’ll pay the bill and then go back to the office. You guys chat slowly!"
几个人都站了起来，目送县长离开后，舅舅抱住了尘香，对秘书说：“我听说了这小子的一些事，他将来肯定比我有出息！”
秘书笑着对尘香说：“比舅舅更有出息，比蹬天难！”
他们三人聊了一会儿后，舅舅拿出了一个装着300两银子的袋子，放到了秘书的面前。秘书连忙说：“我可不能收您的钱！”
Several people stood up and watched the county magistrate leave. Uncle hugged Dust-Scent and said to the secretary: "I heard about this kid. He will be more promising than me in the future!"
The secretary smiled and said to Dust-Incense: "It's harder than climbing to the sky to be more promising than Uncle!" After the three of them chatted for a while, Uncle took out a bag containing 300 taels of silver and put it in front of the secretary. The secretary hurriedly said: "I can't take your money!"
舅舅笑着回答：“礼物！”
秘书立刻站了起来，接过了袋子，说：“谢谢舅舅！您的新身份证，我回去就做。晚上，我给您送过去。”
舅舅指着尘香回答：“不麻烦您了！新身份证做好后，交给他，让他下班后给我带回去。”
Uncle smiled and replied, "Gift!"
The secretary immediately stood up, took the bag, and said, "Thank you, Uncle! I will make your new ID card when I get back. I will send it to you in the evening."
Uncle pointed at Dust-Scent and replied, "Don't bother you! When the new ID card is made, give it to him and ask him to bring it back to me after get off work."
3.5.7-5
县长秘书跟着尘香进了档案库，就开始为舅舅做身份证明。尘香默默地在旁边看着，记下了秘书作假身份证的方法。随后他向秘书询问了舅舅家的地址，就回家找弟弟尘凡了。尘凡一听哥哥让他陪着去舅舅家，很不高兴。尘香解释说：“县长请舅舅吃饭，他拉我一起去，是在抬举我。咱俩应该去谢谢他。”
到舅舅家后，这哥俩敲门，没人开门。他俩拉开门就进去了。屋里没人，但被屋子里的布置惊呆了，和龙王爷爷（即熬钦）的房间布置的一样，还供着龙王的雕像。雕像的前面放着一本《龙王经》（注，本书3.4《大禹治水》是根据这本经改编的）。尘香翻开书一看，更吃惊了。这书述说的是尧舜禹龙王和自己的父亲牛郎之间的事。还有一章详细地叙述了牛郎父子三人到琼洲后直至这哥俩离开琼洲的许多生活细节。
The prefect secretary followed Dust-Scent into the archive and began to make an identity card for Uncle. Dust-Scent silently watched from the side and memorized the secretary's method of making a fake ID. He then asked the secretary for the address of his uncle's house and went home to find his brother Dust-Mortal. Dust-Mortal was upset when he heard that his brother had asked him to accompany him to Uncle's house. Dust-Scent explained, “The prefect invited Uncle to dinner, and he was lifting me up by dragging me along. The two of us should go and thank him.”
When they got to their uncle's house, the two brothers knocked on the door and no one opened it. They opened the door and went in. There was no one in the house, but they were surprised by the layout of the house, which was the same as that of the room of the grandfather of Dragon King (i.e. Aoqin), and there was also a statue of the Dragon King. In front of the statue sits a copy of the Dragon King Sutra (Note: Chapter 3.4 "Yu Treats the Water" in this book is adapted from this sutra). Dust-Scent opened the book and was even more surprised. The book described the events between Yao, Shun Yu, Dragon King, and their own father, Cowboy. There was also a chapter detailing many details of the life of Cowboy, Dust-Incense, and Dust Mortal after they arrived in Hainan until the two brothers left Hainan.

这哥俩寻找到了后院，发现了身穿龙袍的舅舅正站在一棵桃树旁边。尘凡问舅舅：“你是龙王爷爷派来的吗？”
舅舅摇摇头回答：“我在等你们俩来。我没见过龙王。”

The three of them went back to the house to eat and Uncle began to tell his story. Uncle said, “I was a political prisoner from birth. When I was a child, my mother (i.e., Princess Big Nest, King Mother of the West) told me, 'My father (Zhang the Butcher) is charged with an important mission for the Nuwa family and will become one of the greatest emperors in history, so he doesn't know I exist.' Mom told me to prepare a gift for my dad and give it to him when he became an emperor. Later my dad really became the emperor of Hua (i.e. Yan Di, Shao Hao). I asked my mom, 'What does dad like most?' Mom replied, 'I've heard him rant a few times: I've never seen what a big pile 60 tons of gold is!' I told Mom, 'I'll give him 60 tons of gold!' It wasn't long before Mom got back to me that Dad didn't like my gift and didn't want to see me.”
舅舅继续说：“几个月后，爸爸派人来问，‘我送他什么见面礼？’我回答，‘送他120吨黄金’。爸爸拒绝见我。几个月后，爸爸又派人来问我，我要送他什么见面礼？我回答，200吨黄金。爸爸拒绝见我。后来，我委托人告诉爸爸，‘我送他一句话：我这辈子没做过对不起父母的事！’妈妈告诉我，‘你爸爸听了这一句话的礼物，很高兴！但他说你缺福，他不应当见你。他让我给你做一件龙袍，说你可能以后用得着！’”

舅舅说着，给尘香和尘凡看龙袍，说：“这件龙袍是我妈妈亲自设计的，她亲自缝了三年。那时候，她是夏国和华国，两个国家的皇帝，她正向尧帝做政权移交，很忙！”舅舅一边给这哥俩看龙袍一边说：“这脖子下面的扣子叫做龙王扣，是尧帝让人制作的，尧帝亲手给我缝上的。我妈妈看得都不好意思了。尧帝说她喜欢我。”

舅舅继续说：“后来有朋友给我出主意说撰写《中华法典》能积无穷的福。尧舜禹在琼洲的故事没人写，如果我愿意，它可以把材料送给我。我就开始写《龙王经》了。前几天，出版商把我写的这本书送来了。”舅舅指着龙王雕像旁边的两摞书说：“就是这本书！前天，我第一次梦见我爸爸玉皇大帝了。他对我说，‘很荣幸能成为《龙王经》的第一个读者！’他说我写的这本书适合普通百姓读，会利益后人千万年。”
Uncle continued, “Then a friend gave me the idea that writing the Chinese Codex would accumulate inexhaustible fortune. No one had written the story of Yao, Shun and Yu in Hainan, and it could send me the material if I wanted. I then started to write the Dragon King Sutra. He said that the book I wrote is suitable for ordinary people to read and will benefit future generations for thousands of years.”

尘香和尘凡离开舅舅家时已经是午夜了，外面刮起了大风。兄弟俩仿佛看见每隔一段距离站着一位士兵，但这哥儿俩谁也没在意。第二天早晨醒来后，都觉着昨晚看见的士兵好像是雕像似的，决定回到舅舅家查看。到舅舅家的门前后，他们俩四处看，即没看见士兵也没看见雕像。舅舅家的们半开着。这哥俩就又进屋了，发现舅舅已经不在了，龙王的雕像前放着两本书，书中间夹着个字条：我这辈子没做过对不起父母的事！福！
It was midnight when Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal left Uncle's house, a gale was blowing outside. It was as if the brothers saw a soldier standing at every other distance, but neither of the brothers paid any attention to it. Upon waking up the next morning, both felt as if the soldiers they saw last night were statues and decided to return to Uncle's house to check. After arriving at Uncle's door, they both looked around and saw neither the soldiers nor the statues. The door of their uncle's house was half open. The two brothers went back into the house and found that Uncle was no longer there. In front of the statue of the Dragon King there were two books with a note in the middle of them: I've never done anything wrong to my parents in my life! Fortune!
尘香对弟弟说：“这书是给咱俩的，一人一本！昨天，你已经拿了一本了。今天，我再拿一本。”
一些天后，这兄弟俩再次去舅舅家查看。屋门是关着的，但没锁。他俩进去后，发现屋里没人；但《龙王经》少了几本。随后，这兄弟俩多次去舅舅家察看，仍然没人在家，只是《龙王经》越来越少。直到有一天，兄弟俩发现这个家有了新主人。新主人说：“我们刚买了这栋房子，不认识以前的房主。”
Dust-Scent said to her brother, “This book is for both of us, one for each of us! Yesterday, you already took one. Today, I will take another one.”
Some days later, the brothers went to their uncle's house to check again. The door of the house was closed but unlocked. When they went in, they found no one in the house; however, several copies of the Dragon King Sutra were missing. After that, the brothers went to their uncle's house several times to check, and still no one was home, but the Dragon King Sutra was missing more and more. Until one day, the brothers found that the house had a new owner. The new owner said, “We just bought this house and don't know the previous owner.”
3.5.8 尘香当村长 Dust-Scent Becomes Village Chief
话说尘香看见县长秘书给舅舅改身份证的第二天，他就根据从捕快们得来的信息，在档案库中找到了合适的“复活人选”。大虎山地区本来隶属于另一个县，最近才被划分给本县。档案刚被送过来。卢堂左和卢堂右是两兄弟，七年前进山打猎，被洪水冲走了。他们的父母卢岩和刘健君因为怀念孩子，就病了。不久后，这地区发生了瘟疫，这对儿可怜得父母都在瘟疫中死了。随后，整个大虎山地区被封锁了。这时，瘟疫的封锁刚被解除半年。尘香看档案中对这俩兄弟的年龄体貌的描述和自己及弟弟都很相近，就决定去调查一下。

跤手回答：“没有！我是从山东济南逃荒出来的，看这里有山有水的，就在这儿住下了。我已经在这里住半年了。以前这地方方圆十里就我一个人住，前天，村东头儿来了一对儿夫妇。他们俩是从河南逃荒出来的；男人叫秀才。”
卢堂左假装伤心，对跤手说：“兄弟！我给你二两银子，你帮我给我父母的坟立块碑，把房子修修，再在后园里种些菜。我在县里工作，很少回来。我不回来，那菜你就自己吃。我现在去村东头儿秀才家看看。” 卢堂左来到秀才家。这时，秀才不在家。卢堂左听说她家没锅，想有两只羊，就送给了她二两银子。
Wrestler replied, "No! I fled from Jinan, Shandong, and settled here because there are mountains and water. I have lived here for half a year. Before, I was the only one living in this place within a radius of ten miles. The day before yesterday, a couple came to the east of the village. They fled from Henan; the man is called Scholar."
Hall-Left Lu pretended to be sad and said to Wrestler, "Brother! I give you two taels of silver now. You can help me build a tombstone for my parents' graves, repair the house, and plant some vegetables in the backyard. I work in the county and rarely come back. If I don't come back, you can eat the vegetables by yourself. I will go to Scholar's house at the east end of the village to visit him now."
Hall-Left Lu came to Scholar's house. At this time, Scholar was not at home. Hall-Left Lu heard that her family had no pot and wanted two sheep, so he gave her two taels of silver.
尘香回到县政府后，就开始改档案，但他发现怎么也不能通过验算。最后他来找县长秘书了，说不想节省400两银子了。秘书进到档案室查看后说：“你不能依照我给你舅舅做档案的方式做你自己的档案。他去的地方你现在还不能去。”秘书说着，就开始教尘凡制作“复活”的档案。县长秘书帮尘香制作完身份证后，说：“这个身份证你在不用的时候，不要带在身上。另外，我是借调过来这个县的，等你学会了管理档案库，我就走了。你得常来上班，我教你填写和核实档案。半个月后，市里会来人检查咱的档案库，取走基数。也就是说，半个月后，你和你弟弟的新身份证就生效了。

After the county prefect's secretary helped Dust-Scent make the ID card, he said: "Don't carry this ID card with you when you don't need it. In addition, I am seconded to this county. When you learn how to manage the archives, I will leave. You must come to work often, and I will teach you to fill in and verify the files. Half a month later, someone from the city will come to check our archives and take away the data base. In other words, half a month later, your and your brother’s new ID cards will take effect.

尘香回到家后，告诉弟弟他们俩已经有了新的身份证。他说：“大虎山那地方可好啦，有山有湖。你得去看看。我已经给咱们新的爹妈磕过头了。你也得去磕头。”
这天尘香和尘凡就一起去大虎山了。路过集市时，尘凡买了口锅，进入卢堂左的村子时，遇见一个人赶着两只羊。尘香就对赶羊的人说：“我用二两银子买你这两只羊？”赶羊的人就同意了。尘香和尘凡把羊和锅给村东边的秀才家送去了。秀才家里没人，他俩就把羊赶进了羊圈。把锅放在了院子里。
After Dust-Scent returned home, he told his brother that they both had new ID cards. He said, "Big Tiger Mountain is a great place with mountains and lakes. You must go and see it. I have already kowtowed to our new parents. You have to kowtow too."
That day, Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal went to Big Tiger Mountain together. When passing by the market, Dust-Scent bought a pot. When entering the village of Hall-Left Lu, he met a man driving two sheep. Dust-Scent said to the shepherd, "I will buy your two sheep with two taels of silver?" The shepherd agreed. Dust-Scent and Dust-Mortal sent the sheep and pot to Scholar's house in the east of the village. There was no one at Scholar's house, so they drove the sheep into the sheepfold. The pot was placed in the yard.
尘凡到这个新家一看，也喜欢这里的环境。他俩给新父母卢岩和刘健君磕完头，刚要离开，秀才就赶着两只羊来了，说：“刚才我把这两只羊卖给你了。你没注意，这两只羊又跑回到我们家了。”这时邻居跤手，“嗖”一声，从墙的另一边蹦了过来，说：“你到处发银子，引起混乱！”
卢堂左（即尘香）看见了，惊叹道：“好身手！我怎么以前没看出来你是个武林高手！？”
跤手立刻变得弓腰驼背了，说：“怕你找我打架（比武）！”
秀才说：“我去县里问过了。一个村子有三户人家就可申请注册村名。咱村子该叫什么名字？”
跤手说：“有钱好说话，卢家屯！有钱好办事，村长是卢堂左，副村长是卢堂右！”
Dust-Mortal arrived at the new home and liked the environment. They kowtowed to their new parents, Yan Lu and Eve Liu, and were about to leave. Scholar came with two sheep and said, "I just sold these two sheep to you. You didn't notice that these two sheep ran back to our house." At this time, the neighbor Wrestler jumped over from the other side of the wall with a "whoosh" and said, "You are giving money everywhere and causing chaos!"
Hall-Left Lu (i.e. Dust-Incense) saw it and exclaimed, "What a skill! Why didn't I see that you are a martial arts master before!?" Wrestler immediately became hunched over and said, "I'm afraid you will challenge me to a fight (competition)!"
Scholar said, "I went to the county to ask. A village with three households can apply to register a village name. What should our village be called?"
Wrestler said, "Money makes things easier, Lu Family Village! Money makes things easier, the village chief is Hall-Left Lu, and the deputy village chief is Hall-Right Lu!"
卢堂左说：“我们哥俩在别的地方工作，不常回家，不能当村长。”
跤手说：“你们哥俩负责出钱。秀才和我分别是执行村长，和执行副村长，负责管理村里的事务！”
卢堂左说：“那好吧！县政府里有我的20两银子，就提出来作为卢家屯村委会的基金吧！”
秀才说：“今天我到县里问过，最少50两银子才能设立基金。”
卢堂右（即尘凡）说：“那我捐30两银子。”
Hall-Left Lu said, "My brother and I work in other places and don't go home often, so we can't be village chiefs."
Wrestler said, "You two brothers will be responsible for paying. Scholar and I will be the executive village chief and executive deputy village chief respectively, responsible for managing village affairs!"
Hall-Left Lu said, "Okay then! The county government has my 20 taels of silver, so let's use it as a fund for the Lu Family Village Committee!"
Scholar said, "I went to the county to ask today, and it takes at least 50 taels of silver to set up a fund."
Hall-Right Lu (i.e. Dust-Mortal) said, "Then I will donate 30 taels of silver."
秀才说：“哇！这么快就筹到了五十两银子。我去取笔和纸，明天就到县里去注册。”他问卢堂右：“你那30两银子什么时候能送到？”
卢堂右回答：“既然你着急用，明天早晨我就送到县政府。”
尘香看了秀才写的字，惊叹道：“这字写得真漂亮！”
秀才回答：“我的字写得很好，可我只认识900个字，所以我爷爷称呼我为秀才。”
卢堂左问：“那我认识1500个字，我该被称呼为什么？”
秀才说：“你认识那么多的字，我应该崇拜你，所以你是‘贡生’。”
Scholar said, "Wow! We have raised 50 taels of silver so quickly. I will go get a pen and paper and go to the county to register tomorrow." He asked Dust-Mortal, "When can your 30 taels of silver be delivered?"
Dust-Mortal replied, "Since you need it urgently, I will deliver it to the county government tomorrow morning."
Dust-Scent looked at the words written by the scholar and exclaimed: "This is so beautiful!"
Scholar replied: "My handwriting is very good, but I only know 900 hieroglyphics, so my grandfather calls me a Scholar." Hall-Left Lu asked: "Then I know 1,500 hieroglyphics, what should I be called?"
Scholar said: "You know so many hieroglyphics, I should admire you, so you are a 'tribute student'."

第二天早晨，秀才到县政府为卢家屯登记。县长秘书与秀才和跤手谈了一会儿后认为：这个基金应该被称作 ‘大虎山乡慈善基金会’，由秀才和跤手作为基金会的主席和副主席，负责给每家每月发一吊钱，并且代理卢家屯的村委会事务。县长的秘书向这个基金捐了200两银子，他还说： “等你们俩把这笔钱花没了，你们俩就可以做乡长和副乡长了。”
卢堂右因为工地有事，去县政府比约定的时间晚了两个小时。他到那里时，已经有30多人向大虎山慈善基金会捐了银子，惊讶地问：“这个基金是什么时候成立的？怎么这么多人捐款？”
县长的秘书回答：“两个小时之前成立的。”
卢堂右心想：“这个县的民风可真好！”
The next morning, Scholar went to the county government to register Lu Family Village. After talking with Scholar and Wrestler for a while, the county prefect’s secretary thought that this fund should be called the "Big Tiger Mountain Township Charity Foundation". Scholar and Wrestler would be the chairman and vice chairman of the foundation, responsible for giving each family one hundred yuan per month and acting as the village committee of Lu Family Village. 3.5.9 更改行宫的设计 Changing the Design of Palace
依据更改后的工程施工安排，尘香和尘凡先做了通风道防盗墙的抗破坏实验，发现防盗墙和行宫的防盗地面非常坚固。尘香为了方便挖洞进入行宫决定更改设计，把进气口移到行宫北面的院墙旁边。尘香用自己的房产做抵押，在县银行得到了贷款。然后他用全部的钱去到那三个施工监理买防盗墙材料的地方，买回了大量的防盗墙材料。他把那建筑材料存放到了离家不远处的一个仓库。一天，那三个政府监理去远处购买装在雷锋塔上的避雷针去了，尘香就开始按照他的方案建造备用进气道的防盗墙了。

尘香指着行宫南面的房子说：“我用我妈给我的房子和地抵押给了县银行得到了贷款。然后，我用全部的钱才买了这些材料。”
三个施工监理问：“如果中央政府不认同你的更改方案，那你的房子和地就被银行收走了。你破产之后住在哪里？”
尘香指着行宫内的地说：“住这儿！我弟弟才十五岁，未成年。我妈（舜帝）不会让他住在大街上。”
Seven days later, the three county government supervisors came back and found that Dust-Scent had changed the design of the anti-thefts wall, and the backup anti-thefts wall had been built one-third of the way, so they immediately stopped the construction of the anti-theft walls. The three of them asked Dust-Incense: "Where did you get so much money to buy so many anti-thefts wall materials?"
Dust-Scent pointed to the house to the south of the palace and said, "I mortgaged the house and land my mother gave me to the county bank to get a loan. Then, I used all the money to buy the materials.”
The three construction supervisors asked, "If the central government does not agree with your change plan, your house and land will be taken away by the bank. Where will you live after you go bankrupt?"
Dust-Scent pointed to the palace and said, "Here! My brother is only fifteen years old, a minor. My mother (Emperor Shun) will not let him live on the street."
三个施工监理说：“你妈不会让你们俩住在这座行宫里，嫌你们俩碍眼。她也不会让你们俩成为乞丐，住在大街上。那她就得同意你的更改方案。但这事是你在我们三人都不在的情况下做的，与我们无关。你得把你的设计更改申请，和你刚才说的话都写下来。我们拿着你的更改方案和你刚才的辩护词去县里汇报。”
传说说，县里收到了沉香的更改方案申请后，也没说什么，就把更改方案申请和辩护词一起送到了位于武汉的中央政府。中央政府就同意了沉香的通风口更改方案。
The three construction supervisors said, "Your mother will not let you two live in this palace because you are an eyesore. She will not let you two become beggars and live on the street. Then she must agree to your change plan. But you did this when the three of us were not around, so it has nothing to do with us. 随后，尘香听这三个施工监理议论，这座行宫的驻军基地房子少，不够用，要扩建。尘香说：“扩建不如建一座新的。这座军营离行宫太近。你看士兵们把行宫的院门前弄得多脏。还有士兵总是扒着墙头向院子里看。我听我妈叨咕过两次了，‘这些人总是向院子里看，也不知道他们在看什么！哪天我找几个人把他们都抓住，刺瞎他们。”
三个施工监理立刻警觉起来了，回答：“谢谢您给我们提供这些信息。为了方便追踪调查，那些士兵当中有三分之一是我们的本地人。把他们弄瞎了会增大我们县的民生支出。我们县本来就穷。”这仨人就向县政府汇报去了。
尘香悄悄地向建筑公司经理询问：“如果建新兵营，位置选在哪里合适？”
建筑公司经理回答：“行宫东面的路是一条驿道的主干道。如果建新兵营可以兼顾驿站，所以新兵营的位置就是在驿道旁边错开行宫正门的两个位置。”
Then, Dust-Scent heard these three construction supervisors discussing that the garrison base houses of this palace were few and insufficient and had to be expanded. Chen Xiang said: "It is better to build a new one than to expand it. This military camp is too close to the palace. You see how dirty the soldiers make the front of the courtyard gate of the palace. And the soldiers are always picking at the wall to investigate the courtyard.
