Arriving at the appointed location in the Woodmere area (11598) near New York's JFK Airport, I saw a sign for an American Story & Clark piano that stated the series and the Clark Piano cymbals possessed the following features: moisture-proof, moth-proof action, and a Clarylone mahogany case design…

Story & Clark is a piano and organ manufacturer founded in Chicago by H. L. Story and Melville Clark. Established in 1857, the company is renowned for its pianos, player pianos, and reed organs, products known for their durability, craftsmanship, and innovation. Today, Story & Clark is a brand under QRS Music Technologies, and its instruments are manufactured to QRS Music Technologies specifications.

History and Background: Hampton L. Story, an American, began manufacturing pianos in 1857 and co-founded the Story & Clark Company with another piano maker, Melville Clark, in 1884. At the beginning of the 20th century, Story & Clark was one of the world's largest piano and organ companies. The company's production facility in Grand Rapids, Michigan, operated until 1990. In 1993, QRS Piano Rolls, Inc. (now QRS Music Technologies) acquired the Story & Clark brand. Now, pianos are manufactured overseas to Story & Clark specifications. This Story & Clark antique piano, marked A3A541, is a superior piece.

I've restored many antique pianos, and their exquisite craftsmanship always amazes me; both the materials and the workmanship are top-notch. Even more astonishing is that many of these pianos are 100% original and still playable. My experience tells me to consider the following: 1. Reconstruction refers to removing old parts and replacing them with new ones (this is more common with grand pianos). 2. Refurbishment refers to repairing existing parts. Upright pianos from the turn of the century to around the 1930s are generally not worth refurbishing (at least in the New York area).

3. See how a good repair and adjustment can breathe new life into an old piano, allowing you to enjoy playing it again. You'll be amazed at how well the piano's tone and performance can be restored after repair, adjustment, restoration, tuning, and a comprehensive overhaul. This repair and adjustment lasted five and a half hours, involving all parts of the action, keyboard, pedals, strings, and hammers. In particular, the comprehensive improvement in tuning and the refinement of tone were the finishing touches that brought this classic Story & Clark piano back to life.
