Good evening. Welcome to the Yorkton
News at 5. Canada's premers are in
Ottawa taking part in two days of
meetings with the economy,
affordability, and trade set to top the
agenda. Prime Minister Mark Carney is
expected to have separate meetings with
some of the leaders today ahead of a
meeting with all the premers tomorrow.
The gathering comes ahead of
negotiations to renew the Canada US
Mexico agreement or KUSMA which is set
for its first formal review this summer.
Compared to the former leader of the
Liberal government, Justin Trudeau,
Saskatchewan's Premier Scott Mo says he
has seen a change in tone from Prime
Minister Carney, which has helped move
provincial policies forward.
We're seeing, you know, collaboration
from our province and a new tone with
respect to uh using some of our
international relationships that we've
been able to build over the last number
of years in China. And I'd say you
probably look to India in the not too
distant future for some uh additional
opportunities. Uh that that was simply
very difficult to to happen before.
Provinces and territories are also
expected to talk about shared priorities
such as infrastructure development and
energy.
A prisoner that escaped from the White
Spruce Training Center in York two weeks
ago has been apprehended by RCMP. On
January 14th, RCMP received a report
that Robert Rine had escaped and was
last seen on Ball Road around 11:35 a.m.
in York. He has been charged with one
count being unlawfully at large. He is
scheduled to appear in Brandon
Provincial Court on charges that were
laid in Manitoba. That appearance is
February 2nd.
People with connections to the 2018
Humbult Broncos bus crash are not happy
with the plot of an upcoming Netflix
series. The currently untitled Netflix
series is set to follow the story of a
high school hockey team that involved in
a bus crash leaving 13 people dead. Now,
many Canadians recall, especially here
in Saskatchewan, the Humble Broncos
accident that happened nearly eight
years ago, which claimed the lives of 16
people. The parent of one of the crash
victims says the similarities between
the two stories are hard to ignore and
Netflix's description calling their
series heartwarming is where those
similarities end.
It's so far from the reality of what any
of us is going through. I think that's
completely unfair and I worry that
people who don't have a lot of knowledge
of the reality are going to see that and
go, "Oh, it's everybody's okay." But
we're not. According to Netflix, the
show is fictional and not inspired by
any real life events.
University of Virginia students have
taken to the internet, voicing their
frustrations with a decision regarding
one of the parking lots at the school.
Now, last year, the university made the
decision to change lot 6 from an MPASS
holding lot to one to now require
student to pay to park. The decision has
not been a popular one among students,
one of which started a petition online
for U of our parking services to change
the lot back to the previous status. The
petition has received at least 400
signatures on change.org.
I'm actually really surprised. I knew
people felt the same way like um it's
it's cold here. It's obviously very cold
here and the like the extra 3 minutes of
walking outside makes a huge difference
especially when you can't afford a
jacket. like I'm lucky, but you know,
for anyone else, it's it becomes a big
problem very fast. Now,
Marowitch says he hasn't heard from U of
our parking services regarding the
petition that he plans to bring it up
with the newly formed UVR students
association in the near future. At Seven
Stones School, a new partnership has
begun between the Regina public schools
and the Regina Food Bank to enhance
student learning. The agreement will
look to deliver food to schools around
the city at lower cost in three phases.
delivering more nutritious food and
prioritizing foods like fruits and
vegetables. Now, schools that will
receive aid in phase one are Arc Colola,
Canot, Dr. George Ferguson, Glenn Elm,
Kitchener, Seven Stones, and Thompson
Schools.
Uh the biggest change will be uh how
much food we're actually processing
inhouse and turning into uh prepared
meals and sort of composed snacks.
There's been no extra work as the
principal of the school to have to
monitor it or anything like that. If
anything, it's alleviating us having to
go grocery shopping, purchase all of the
food and whatnot. So, it's it's it's a
great opportunity, and as it continues
to grow, I think it'll be less and less
and more and more food that's going to
be going out of our building.
12 additional schools will receive aid
between February and March. The total
funding for the agreement is $320,000
and will help close to 19,000 students.
Sask Energy kicked off their 2026 Share
the Warmth Days program at the Cornwall
Center in Regina this morning. Sask
energy staff on hand to hand out coffee
and bags full of warm essentials. The
provincial crown corporation has been
involved with the share the warmth days
program for more than 30 years. It used
to be just a sweater recycling program,
but in 2013 it provided cash grants
allowed the charitable and nonprofit
groups across the province to join in.
Those groups then deliver programming
and services based on keeping people
warm and safe during the coldest winter
months.
Today we have the Eagle Heart Center.
their uh grant recipient this year
through our share the runs grant program
that provides funding to nonprofit and
charitable organizations who are
providing uh warm clothing, food,
shelter or mental health related
services to those in need.
Sask Energy will provide a total of
$100,000 in grants this year to 115
different organizations across
Saskatchewan. The Eagle Heart Center
will use their grant to deliver more
than 100 Christmas hampers filled with
food, gifts, and essential items.
All right, Sabine now joins us for our
first look at weather. And yes, it is
winter, so it's cold out there, but not
as cold as we've experienced in the last
3, four days.
Yeah, some would argue it's still just
cold, and that is completely fair, Lee.
But you're right, it has slowly started
to uh warm up compared to some very
frigid temperatures that we were seeing.
Now, uh I know many people are probably
saying, Sabine, you kept saying that the
warmup is on its way, and it is. It's
just that we still have a little bit of
that arctic air left that's going to
leave some chillier overnight
temperatures, including tonight. So, uh,
we haven't really seen much in terms of
active weather. We did see more cloud
cover rolling through. Tonight, though,
we will dip back down just a few degrees
colder than what our seasonal is. Minus
27 tonight, but the wind chills will be
looking to be in about the midus30s
tonight. Now, warming up to -21. Still
much colder than what the average
daytime high of about - 11 is, but the
warmup is on the way. I promise you,
like I keep saying, but it is coming and
I'll show you that coming up in your
full forecast, Lee. All right, thank
you, Sabine. The Saskatchewan Rough
Riders are moving on without Shawn Bane
Jr. releasing the receiver who is set to
become a free agent next month.
Stays in the pocket of Cory Mace in a
second and 10 at the Winnipeg 12.
Another end zone.
Touchdown Saskatchewan Rough Riders.
Joining the Riders in 2023, Bane Jr.
became a major target for the passing
game with more than 1100 yardds
receiving and four touchdowns. But in
2024, production slowed down. Then a
torn ACL versus Ottawa in September,
ended his season. He did not return to
play a game until late 2025 where he
made four catches for 28 yards, falling
behind Americans in a depth chart like
Joe Roastelli.
Now to make the playoffs at the Scotty
tournament of hearts, Jolene Campbell
and team Saskatchewan likely have to win
all three remaining roundroin games
starting this morning against team Yukon
who skip Bailey Scoffin had more than
team Sask to contend with. Before her
final shot in a fourth end, a bird
actually flew in front of her. Not sure
if that rattled the young skip a little
bit, but after that she would miss a hit
and stick, giving up a steal of two. 5-1
Saskatchewan. They would go on to the
104 win. So right now, uh, pool A,
Caitlyn Lawz, Manitoba, and team Canada
have qualified for playoffs with 6-0 and
6-1 records, respectively. So that
leaves one spot. Ontario, Nova Scotia
are 4-2. Saskatchewan 3 and three.
Saskatchewan plays Ontario tonight. They
need to win that game and hope Nova
Scotia loses one more to even have a
shot at making playoffs. Big game
tonight for the York Terriers. They head
to Estan to face the Bruins. The
Terriers lead Estan by one point for
fifth in the standings. Although York
does have two games in hand. York has
won three or four from the Bruins this
season. Game time 7:00 at Affinity
Place.
Yes, it's uh it's getting warmer, we
promise you. Full weather details coming
up with Sabine after the break.
So again, I perhaps a deceiving day. We
had a beautiful day when it comes to
conditions, sunny conditions, uh clear
conditions, not a whole lot even when it
comes to wind uh wind speeds or wind
gusts. It was just still pretty cold. We
didn't really see a warm up close to
what our average is for this time of
year. And that I mean, it's winter in
Saskatchewan. What are we to expect?
Now, we still have some cold warnings
further up north, but as we head into uh
Oh, she didn't want to zoom in for me.
As we get into the Parkland, that's what
we're going to focus on. So, again, we
didn't really see much in terms of
active weather. That will change as we
approach the weekend, but also on the
weekend is where we see those warmer
temperatures, and that does start on
Friday. And I'll show you that coming up
in your uh 7-day forecast. But in terms
of what we've got going on, again, we
saw what we were kind of seeing over the
last couple of days as well. Most of
that cloud cover is staying in western
Saskatchewan, the Parkland, eastern
parts of the province remaining to see
uh clearer conditions for most of the
day. Now, it's not until we get into
Thursday morning. We do have some
precipitation coming in from Alberta in
the form of snow, but this system looks
like it's going to stay kind of into
central Saskatchewan before it clears
out down south. We will still continue
to see more cloud cover Thursday in the
Parkland. We do also have snow on the
way for the Parkland. That's not
expected until Friday, late night into
Saturday. And that uh I'll talk more
about coming up in your 7-day forecast,
but that's the soonest we're expecting
to see some of that snow for Thursday.
mostly cloudy conditions. By the time we
get into Friday, we will start to see
conditions clear up, leaving us with a
mix of sun and cloud. But in terms of uh
active weather, that's all expected on
Saturday. Temperatures again, the
average day daytime. The average lows,
evening lows are usually around the
minus 23 mark. So, we do have some
colder than average uh temperatures like
Hudson Bayus 28 and for Melville - 27
for Swan River. warmer for Humbleton
Wattress. Uh getting down to minus 16
and Wyard again being right in that
seasonal range for tomorrow. Average
daytime high is minus 11 and that's what
Humbult Wattress is going to see. As we
saw that system uh that is bringing snow
through tomorrow, it's looking like it's
going to be very light if any coming
through the Humbult Wattress area. Does
not look like it's going to be leaving
um large amounts in terms of
accumulation through the area. Swan
River - 18 -7 for Hudson Bay -14 and
cloudy for Wyard and Melville -20 for
Yorkton tonight expecting a little bit
of cloud cover -27 again with the wind
chill more like uh windchill value of
about - 33 - 34 but winds not too bad at
up to about 10 kilometers an hour
tomorrow winds picking up to 20 minus 21
and sunny is the expected uh daytime
high there but here's a look at your
next seven days so as I said the warmup
is is arriving
-21 tomorrow. Thursday, a mix of sun and
cloud. Friday, mainly sun sunny,
minus15. By Saturday, there is your
warmup. Minus 5, warmer than the daytime
high of - 11. But snow is expected
throughout the day. Expecting up to five
or close to 5 cm of snow on Saturday. By
Sunday, - 9, mostly cloudy. Minus 8
Monday, mostly cloudy. Minus 5 on
Tuesday. And Wednesday, a mix of sun and
cloud. And minus 4.

Welcome back. Today we are catching up
with the Yorktown Film Festival as they
are raising awareness to a very very
important issue. Hello Randy, thank you
so much for joining me today.
Well, thank you for the invitation. I
always look forward to it.
It's always my pleasure to have you. So
the YFF is doing some very important
work raising awareness to what issue
for eating disorders. Um and we're
knowing that in society uh in today's
society that's become u much more of an
issue. Um and we have the perfect film
for it. It won the mental health
category in last year's Golden Chief
Awards. So we're very pleased to be
presenting it.
Okay. That's that's so important. But
let me ask you like was it that you saw
the movie first and then thought it
would be perfect for this week or you
knew that this week coming up and then
you picked the movie for that.
So every year and that's what the
process we're in now we uh call for
submissions of films. So we usually get
about 300 films. So after the film
festival as we look to set up our open
cinemas which are open to the public on
monthly screenings we look at several
things exactly that. We'll see if there
are any weeks uh that we need to look
at, months that we need to look at. We
also look at some of our award-winning
films and how they may fit. We also look
for will our audience appreciate it and
learn from it in in York. And this one
uh especially at the festival when I was
able to meet the executive director of
Bridgepoint uh who is uh the person uh
who was the producer of recover ed for
eating disorders. uh as I met her and
really got her passion for this and her
concerns for it whether it's young, old,
female, males, whomever um deserves to
receive the the um I guess the the
compassion that something like this
gives because um eating disorders can be
quickly pushed aside as it's not
anything that we need to be concerned
about. It's not a big health issue, but
it is and it's a mental health issue
also.
Absolutely.
Excuse me. So, how I see this, it's it's
a great initiative in a sense that the
movie itself amplifies the message of
this awareness week.
Yeah.
And the awareness week also amplifies
the message of this movie.
And that's one of the things that we
always look for like you're going to see
in March, we always do something for the
elimination of racial discrimination.
and we will be working with the
multicultural council of Saskatchewan,
the city of York and we always have
films that can be highlighted there. So,
we take a look at that. And it also also
really shows um the variety of films we
get. Like last uh month in January,
well, I guess it still is in January,
but early January, we showcase some
cooking shows um and FlatOut
Saskatchewan that happens here. Uh, and
this month in for February, it's like a
totally different type of topic that
we're dealing with, but that's what we
see um in the films that the York Film
Festival gets in. So, we say to the
public, if you're doing something, if
you're looking for information, contact
us because we probably have a really
good film.
Yeah, for sure. And uh we teased this
movie already. You mentioned that it's
impactful that the creator of this movie
is very very passionate about their
project, but can you just go into detail
as to what this movie is?
Well, it's it's almost like
testimonials, too. They identify what
the issues are around eating disorders.
Um, and then they have people talking
about real life situations. Um, and I
find that very impactful because, you
know, sometimes we there may be
something that's that that's involved in
our lives in some way, but we don't look
at it as a health issue, as a mental
health issue. It's just something that's
going on. But you can do some
identifying of this. This does need
help. We need to look at this. So, we're
talking they in the film they talk to
people. Uh it's almost like testimonials
about identifying it then what they went
through and then the recovery of it all
too. Um and uh Carla Shabbat is the
executive uh director at Bridge Point.
And it's interesting, this is a very uh
small community uh outside of Outlook
Saskatchewan that this center is in, but
the professionals that they have that
provide these services and it's a
holistic. It looks at the whole person.
It treats some of the issues you may
have with mental health, but it talks
about definitely about the nutrition and
how you how you fit that in now with the
mental health. It talks about physical
activity. It talks about everything.
talks about everything about your person
that you need to lead a healthy,
productive lifestyle.
That's a very important message. Who do
you recommend this movie to?
I would recommend it to everyone. Um, no
matter what your age is, because I think
it impacts families, all of us, that we
always have to be diligent about our
mental health. And it's so easy to push
it off and saying, "Oh, that's somebody
and they've always been like that." No,
that's no longer something that we can
look at. So, we're doing it on a Tuesday
evening at 7:00 February the 3rd. So,
everyone can come. It only will be about
an hour, hour and a half tops. But what
we also we have Carla there, we'll have
the director of the film that talk about
even why he got involved in the film.
Did this have something to do with his
personal life? What did he why did he
get involved? And that's the other thing
I like it. It's around the art of the
film making and why he thought it was
important.
It is promising to be a very very
impactful night. Well, thank you Randy
so much for joining us today and I hope
to see you like again for the next open
cinema.
Thank you. We really enjoy coming and
talking about our films.
Thank you.
The last time a Saskatchewan rank won
the Scotties Tournament of Hearts was in
2011. You bet. PlayStation 3 was in and
Saskatchewan Skip Amber Holland was
knocking opponents out. Her Krono
Saskatchewan rink breeze through round
one going 9 and two. Saskatchewan beat
Ontario in a semi-final to reach the
final against team Canada skipped by the
legendary Jennifer Jones. It was a
seessaw match with no team doing any
stealing until the 10th end. The game
was tied at seven and Holland had a
pretty nice setup in the house for a
steal. Jennifer Jones lined up to try a
runback and it looked good initially,
but it had a bit too much weight and her
rock rolled out giving Holland the win.
Saskatchewan had won the Scotties and to
this day it remains the last time they
crowned themselves Canadian women's
curling champions.

An overdose alert has been issued for
the community of Punishai. According to
RCMP, there have been five suspected
overdoses in the last two weeks, one of
them fatal. Fentinol is believed to be
the culprit behind these overdoses. The
alert will be ongoing until February
4th. And a reminder that all street
drugs due to the unknowns are extremely
hazardous.
The town of Stoutton has been keeping a
bit of a snacking secret, which is now
blowing up online. Now, for a decade,
the Stoutton meat market has been
creating its own cheese and meat trail
mix. Last month, demand for the mix
skyrocketed, leaving the market
sometimes sold out before lunchtime.
It's a new experience for the shop, who
are doing all they can to keep up.
It's just a huge demand on this. Uh like
I've got help back here. People that are
normally like maybe working up front.
Now we're pulling them back here. Like
you got to cut up some stuff to get get
it into bags. Man, let's get it on the
shelf. But like I say, you got to have
the jerky. You got to have the sticks,
the smoked sausage. So it's like 3 days
of running the smokehouse just to make
the stuff to make a batch of the trail
mix.
The Stoutton Meat Market says they are
now taking orders over the phone for
anyone in the area looking to pick some
up.
That's all the time I have for your 5:00
news. I'll be back at 6:00 with your
local headlines. But for now, get set
for national news.
