Previous governments in Canada have worked quite closely with the US visav China and sometimes it at at a great cost for Canada. how would you assess our joint effectiveness in influencing Chinese behavior, economic strategy, security behavior, etc. And what do you think we ought to be doing differently if you think there's room for improvement? there's always there's always room for improvement. Um that's uh I think one of the things that we can improve on, I'll say this from a Canadian perspective with respect to China?
Mark Carney
is being clearer about where we engage. I alluded to it very lightly, but um and it's a general point in variable geometry. You have different tiers of engagement depending on how like-minded you are. So with respect to China or any other country that's well any other where do you engage deeply where you comfortable engaging deeply in the commodity space in in aspects of energy for example uh straight uh basic manufacturing where where there guard rails um and what should just be left off to the side elements that bridge into national security uh privacy other aspects like that. So that's where we can be we can be better number one. Number two, um in my experience with China, they are amongst other things very sincere and engaged on climate. Uh this is a country run by engineers. This is a country that understands a lot of the engineering solutions to issues around emission. they've happened to have built real competitive advantage in a number of these areas as well. So there's a question of how and there is a almost a standing offer from them about how to engage in the global comments in and around climate uh which a country like Canada which is a it is an energy superpower um when we're certainly going to build and uh fully exploit that then we're dealing on and we care about this issue as well. It's still part of our policy.
is still part of uh uh and and so there's an opportunity to engage. Again, the United States can choose could choose that lane uh very easily, but probably at the moment that's not where the the engagement will
