From dress distress to aloo gosht: what went on backstage

There’s a lot more to fashion week than the show itself. For journalists, bloggers, style icons, socialites, even sponsors, the red carpet was their own runway, showing off their personal style, and flaunting latest trends straight off the ramp.

We could gather the best filtered runway photos, but we’d be kidding you if we didn’t tell you where the real Fashion Week action goes down: backstage. Think elaborate makeup palettes, dozens of blow dryers, curl catalogue, model selfies and utter chaos. Although Lahore was warm, things were heated way up on the runway and backstage.

I am sure there is never a good time for anyone to sprain their ankle but for Nadia Malik, one of the key models in the show, it was the worst time to twist her foot on Day two but that did not stop the supermodel to own the ramp, “Hasan Sheheryar, my director, challenged me that I could still walk the ramp. I could see him cheering for me from the director’s booth, lifting my spirits.” She added, “In my 15 years of modeling, I have never smiled on the ramp but he made me smile with my twisted foot. Recalling backstage trivia, Nadia revealed, “I also caught up on my reading backstage right now, I am reading, The prisoner by Omar Shahid Hamid.”

Ever wonder what those lithe models munch on during fashion week? It’s not just cucumbers and lettuce. Nooray Bhatti played a fine host and entertained her fellow models from Karachi with home-cooked aloo gosht and achaar. “I enjoyed every moment though I was sick with a terrible viral and now looking forward to lots of sleep, spa days and spending time with family,” said Bhatti.

The last day of the show was a delight. The one who stole the show with charm and charisma was Fawad Khan. Fawad walked for Republic by Omar Farooq for a collection titled Que Sera Sera. “Fawad was late as he got stuck in traffic. It was utter chaos backstage and we barely managed to get him ready in less than 10 minutes before he walked the ramp but it was all worth it. For me, Fawad shares the same stature in looks and stardom as Alain Delon,” Said Farooq.

Areeba Habib saved a near wardrobe malfunction on the ramp. Nida Azwer was left flabbergasted after seeing Areeba weraing the back of a dress in front. The designer screamed in despair. “I was standing in the que waiting to go on the stage and I had less than 20 seconds to wear the dress the right way when Cybil helped me change. I almost had a heart attack but later couldn’t help stop laughing,” recalled Areeba.

Nabila’s team did a tremendous job with makeup and hair. “I wanted a look for models seemed effortless and clean, yet effective — that’s my signature style,” said Nabila.

Backstage, the model and the makeup team were seen grooving to the song, ‘Cheerleader’ by Omi, which became an instant hit and was played twice during prep for Sania Maskitya and Nida Azwer’s Iznik collection.

Coming to her own rescue was model Hira Tareen. For one of the shows where she was a showstopper, the model’s dress trail got stuck at the exit of the stage. “I decided to wait on stage until all the models walked till the end, but in fear of being late for the finale, I walked in too soon and missed my walk with the designer who walked in later than I did but I managed to make it look like it was all choreographed,” she recalled.

Moral of the story: a lot of sweat, tears, hairsprays, selfies and groovy soundtracks behind every superb runway.
