Kate Moss makes a case for the white shirt as the ultimate beach cover-up

Kate Moss wearing a white shirt while holidaying in Greece might not sound like breaking news, but the model does throw up some much-needed beachwear inspiration. If flowing kaftans and whimsical dresses make you feel more ‘hippy’ than ‘haute’ then Moss’s simple shirt could be the answer to your holiday packing woes.

Moss, 42, is currently spending time on Sir David Tang’s yacht with his family, the Duchess of York, Kate’s daughter Lila Grace and her boyfriend, Count Nikolai von Bismarck. The motley crew have all been favouring a cream colour palette during their Aegean jaunt. We can largely assume this is partially to beat the heat in, but mostly to highlight their sun-kissed skin in the all-important Instagram pictures.

In a bow-side Insta snap of Moss sandwiched between Ed Tang and John Auerbach, the founder of plus-size clothing brand Eloquii, Moss wears a simple tuxedo style shirt and black bikini bottoms. Mussed up hair and a simple neck charm are the only accents to her effortless yacht style. Somehow we knew Moss wouldn’t buy into the colourful pom-pom trend...

During a summer season that has seemed to celebrate artisanal flourishes more than just the usual deluge of tassels, Moss’s pared-back look is utterly refreshing. Case in point: you might not still own those be-pommed sandals in two years time, but chances are you will still have a handful of timeless white shirts in your arsenal.

When taking your shirt to the beach, remember that the look should be as relaxed as possible. Fasten only the middle buttons, like Moss, to show a little skin. Though Moss’s shirt fits her petite frame perfectly, boyfriend styles are useful for creating a fluid, loose silhouette. Oversized styles will also mean that your derrière is covered, so you can go from beach-to-bar without worrying about what to wear on your bottom half. For a figure-defining flourish, knot your shirt and wear with denim shorts, à la Moss in Spain, 2013 (below). And remember, this is all about looking understated, so avoid those pom-poms at all costs.
