It is the most expensive combination of eggs, flour and sugar you'll ever eat.
But having the perfect wedding cake is often a priority for brides, even if the cost - which can reach $1,000 or higher - is extraordinary.
So if the dessert that arrives on your wedding day is not the picture perfect creation promised, it can be bitterly disappointing... as these brides discovered.
Hundreds of disappointed and amused brides have submitted their best cake fails to Cake Wrecks - from slanting bases and different colours to missing layers and unexpected additions.
Beverly ordered a lime green four-tiered wedding cake from her local baker's catalogue ahead of her wedding, and requested a dark blue layer as well.
The outcome was a two-tiered blue and green creation that was not only redone twice, but looked nothing like the picture they had originally seen.
Jamie gave her baker a picture of a stunning three-tiered cake and requested that her one look like the top tier, with smooth sides, a monogram and a simple purple ribbon on the bottom.
Although a simple request, what she received was a large cube-shaped dessert with a tightly tied ribbon and crumbling icing - a far cry from the image she had provided.
Another bride asked her baker for a three-layered cake with red ribbons, a matching red sash and white flowers and a red and yellow on randomly placed.
What she got was a melting, sinking dessert covered in dying flowers with no sash - and the ribbons were underneath the icing.
The flower issues continued throughout the submissions, with flora proving to be a struggle for many bakers.
One vine-stamped cake was recreated with fresh wilting flowers while another was lathered in browning rose petals instead of a sprinkle of fresh ones.
Some bakers took it upon themselves to add extra pieces to the cakes, with strange bride and groom cake toppers appearing on some of the creations without notice.
In one of the worst cases, a couple asked for a BMW cake and instead received a slanting hand-painted dessert complete with Barbie and Ken dolls.
With more wedding cake fails continuing to flood in everyday, couples should make it a priority to view their dream cake with their own eyes before it's too late.
