EDMONTON - The Edmonton Eskimos dont mind winning an ugly game now and then, especially when it gets them into the post-season.http://www.nygiantsfanatic.com/c-19-giants-damon-harrison-jersey.aspx . Jerome Messam scored the games lone touchdown as the Eskimos secured a playoff spot and a share of first place in the CFLs West Division with a 17-1 victory over the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday. The Riders have been outscored 99-9 in their last three games. The Eskimos, who snapped a three-game losing streak at home, improved to 8-6 on the season, moving into a tie for first with both the B.C. Lions and the Calgary Stampeders. "Offensively wed say winning ugly," Edmonton quarterback Ricky Ray said of the low-scoring game. "Defensively, they are saying its a beautiful win. We made a lot of mistakes on offence. But its a huge win for us. We havent played that well at home. Its great to put ourselves in the playoffs and also to get us back tied for first in the West. These last four games are going to be interesting." Eskimos head coach Kavis Reed said making the second season was just the first step his team wants to take. "We wanted to give ourselves an opportunity to play the last game of the year in this league and now weve done that," he said. "Now weve got to focus on correcting the many mistakes that we committed tonight and get strong as a football team and move toward things that weve set out for ourselves in the beginning." With their third consecutive loss, the Roughriders fell to 4-10 and are now out of the West playoff picture, with only a slim chance of making the post-season through an Eastern cross-over. "There may be a sliver of a hope yet but if we dont start playing better any little slivers of light are going to turn into darkness on us," said Riders head coach Ken Miller. The coach added it is a frustrating time for his team. "Our defence played so hard, but on offence, you have to catch the ball when it is thrown to you," Miller said. "We have to do a better job blocking. We had the beginnings of good drives that didnt materialize into anything because of turnovers. "Its frustrating because we havent scored a touchdown in a long time (13 quarters). Thats directly attributable to me." Saskatchewan was pressing during a long drive on its second possession but Eskimo defensive back Donovan Alexander kept them from scoring with an interception of Riders starting quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie on the Edmonton 29. Edmonton finally put the first points on the board to start the second quarter as Damon Duval kicked a 32-yard field goal on the heels of a failed direct snap attempt on a punt by Saskatchewan at midfield. Four minutes into the second quarter, Edmonton went up 5-0 as the Riders conceded a safety. The Eskimos scored the games only touchdown with just under four minutes to play in the second as Messam showed some tenacity, bouncing off of a defender and then blazing 51 yards for the touchdown. Saskatchewan looked to be gaining steam late in the first half but once again Alexander stepped up to pick off a Dinwiddie pass deep in Edmonton territory. The Riders got the ball back but once again were intercepted on a highlight reel snag by Eskimo Weldon Brown. Edmonton squandered both opportunities to keep it a 12-0 game at the half. The Eskimos started off the third quarter with a Duval field goal. Darian Durant, who didnt start the game as he is nursing a sore foot, came in to replace Dinwiddie in the second half. Saskatchewan finally got on the scoreboard with three minutes left in the third on a punt single, a point the Esks got back on one of their own four minutes into the fourth. Edmonton got another single on a missed field goal to round out the scoring in the yawner of a game. The Eskimos are back at it on Saturday as they play host to Winnipeg. The Roughriders play again on Sunday at home to the B.C. Lions. Notes: Eskimos linebacker T.J. Open title at Pebble Beach to winning the match that gave Europe victory in the Ryder Cup. He knew an encore was going to be tough.Canadas National Senior Womens Sevens team suffered an early morning setback in their quest to regain the coveted IRB Challenge Cup; but later rebounded to position themselves well, heading into Sundays action, in London England. The Canadians started well in their first match, quickly running in a score against The Netherlands; a team against which Canada has often had contests in the past. The Canadians were able to take a 14 - 12 lead in to the dying seconds, before a penalty deep in their own end gifted the Dutch a kick at goal for the win. The shock 15 - 14 loss meant that Canada could do no better than to finish fourth on day one; but to do that they would need to rack up big results against both Portugal and Russia. Portugal is a new entry into international womens rugby competition and the Canadians had no difficulty dispatching them in match number two. It is one of the peculiarities of Sevens tournaments that points differential often plays an important role in determining tournament rankings, and the Canadians were ruthless in pursuing the largest possible margin of victory. A 54 - 0 win against the Portuguese took Canada to a 1 - 1 record on Saturday, before they ended their day against a tough Russian side. Canadian veteran Mandy Marchak called the teams match against Russia at the Hong Kong Sevens, one of the most physical contests she could remember. So it was with a sense of mission that Canada entered their final fixture of day one; knowing that a big win was needed to secure them the best possible draw on Sunday. It did not take long for Marchak and her teammates to stamp their authority on the match. Nineteen first half-points were followed by a pair of scores in the second, to see Canada overpower their Russian opponents 29 - 0. The margin of victory was enough to provide the women with fourth position and the match-up they wanted on Sunday morning; when they will take on South Africa, who finished fifth. Head Coach John Tait had these words regarding his teams perrformance on day one, in London. http://www.nygiantsfanatic.com/c-33-giants-keenan-robinson-jersey.aspx. "Obviously we did not get the start we wanted against The Netherlands. They are a well-drilled team that has run us close a few times in the last year. It was not a case of us taking them lightly, but of errors in our own execution that compounded into scores for them. The way our team bounced back in the last two games was good to see, and we started to play the way we have been wanting to. We worked hard and gathered enough scores to draw us against South Africa on Sunday morning. They have a few flyers in their squad, but we will look to use our fitness and increase the tempo of the match to suit our style." Should the result against South Africa go Canadas way, the team will then likely be handed a chance to seek revenge against England; the team that defeated them in the Semi-Final of the Hong Kong tournament, last March. Tait was excited that his squad have positioned themselves to possibly take the field against England again, this time at the home of English rugby, Twickenham Stadium, where the semi-final and Grand Final will be played. "Without looking past South Africa, I can say that we have managed to put ourselves in the position we wanted to be in. If we do our jobs, we will have the chance to play England again on their home ground of Twickenham, in front of tens of thousands of people. With the larger stadium pitch, we will be able to use our speed and fitness against them. Being at home and being the defending Challenge Cup holders, the pressure will all be on them." Canadas women will spend Saturday night reviewing video footage of their own performances and those of their likely opponents, but the highlight reel that will motivate them most is the defeat at Hong Kong that has been burned into their memories. Canadas womens sevens stars have been waiting for months for another crack at England and an opportunity to regain their place atop the world of Sevens rugby. Tomorrow will be their chance.
