CALGARY -- Fred Couples won the Champions Tours Shaw Charity Classic on Sunday, chipping in for eagle for a course-record 9-under 61 and beating Billy Andrade with a tap-in birdie on the first hole of a playoff. The 54-year-old Couples also eagled the par-5 11th and had five birdies in his third straight bogey-free round at Canyon Meadows. "No bogeys is good," Couples said. "I consider this to be a nice tricky, tough, little course." Andrade shot 62, making a short eagle putt on the par-5 18th to match Couples at 15 under. "Hats off to Fred and move on," Andrade said. "When you lose you lose. You dont really feel great about it. So, well get them next week in Quebec." Couples holed out from 40 feet for the eagle in regulation on 18. "I landed it right where I wanted to," Couples said. "It was going a little fast, but it obviously hit the pin and went in." In the playoff on 18, Andrade went for the green in two and pulled his approach right of the green and into a skybox. Couples laid up and hit his third within a foot. After taking a drop, Andrade left his chip 40 feet short and missed his birdie putt. "I made a good valiant effort and it didnt go in," Andrade said. Couples broke the course record of 62 set by Bill Glasson last year in the inaugural tournament and matched by Tom Pernice Jr. and Bart Bryant in the first round Friday. Couples also won the Toshiba Classic in March in California and has 11 victories on the 50-and-over tour. The Hall of Famer won 15 times on the PGA Tour. "To come back and win is a great feeling," Couples said. "I started to play pretty well and then my back went out and then my wrist a little bit. So, I took two months off and I havent really played much. Its not surprising, but I played last week in Seattle, which gave me quite a few rounds." Andrade turned 50 in January and is winless in 15 starts on the Champions Tour. The four-time PGA Tour winner also was second in March in the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic. "I really had a wonderful time up here, but you want to win it when you get this close," Andrade said. "Unfortunately, I didnt, so its OK. Lifes still great, everythings good. But, you know, were all fighting to win, you want to win." Steve Lowery and Joe Daley tied for third at 13 under. Lowery finished with a 64, and Daley shot 67. Wes Short Jr. was another stroke back after a 64. "I was thinking 63 might have a shot at it, but you never know when someones going to come out and shoot 61 like that," Lowery said. Couples opened with rounds of 68 and 66 to enter the day four strokes behind leaders Daley, Joe Durant and Bob Tway. Durant had a 73 to tie for 19th at 7 under, and Tway followed his second-round 63 with a 74 to drop into a tie for 27th at 6 under. The Colts missed an opportunity to seize control of the AFC South, show a prime-time TV audience theyre a legitimate title contender and now have to prepare for Peyton Manning and the unbeaten Broncos on a short week. Good luck, right? Chuck Pagano thinks it could be a perfect remedy for Indianapolis ills. "I know it cant come quickly enough for all of us," Pagano said Tuesday when asked about Sundays game. "But weve got to go through the process and prepare, obviously, for this next opponent." Sure, theres plenty to fix between now and the leagues most anticipated game of the season -- Mannings return to Lucas Oil Stadium. And after Monday nights 19-9 loss, the Colts coaches will use every precious moment they have. The cramming session began after an early morning flight back to Indy. Pagano and his staff spent the first part of the day reviewing the tape from their latest stumble in San Diego. It didnt take long to dissect the offence with what Pagano described as only 42 "gradable" plays. They saw four drops including potential scores from Darrius Heyward-Bey and Coby Fleener and a big drop by Reggie Wayne on third down that would have given Indy a key first down. Luck was sacked once, threw a late interception and was under pressure much of the night, and Indy ran only 17 times for 74 yards. Thats not how these Colts (4-2) were built. Yet the biggest problem came on third down. Indy converted only 2 of 10 chances. San Diego (3-3) was 7 of 14. The combination led to a 17-minute disparity in time of possession -- an oddity for a team that came into the weekend with the leagues No. 4 rushing offence. "It was different. It certainly was uncharacteristic of us," Pagano said. "I just think, you can point your finger to a lot of things -- didnt execute well, obviously, third down was an issue on both sides of the ball, which led to the time of possession issue and all those type of things. "Three third downs on defence where you have penalties thhat extend drives by four plays, five plays, nine plays, lead to 10 points, thats shooting yourself in the foot. Indy cant afford a repeat this week against Manning and the high-scoring Broncos (6-0). Denver averages 44.2 points per game, a pace that would shatter the NFLs single-season scoring record set by New England during its perfect 2007 regular season (589). One way to combat the Broncos is to steal a page from San Diegos game plan by keeping the ball on the ground and out of Mannings hands. But Indy has to find other solutions and fast. The Colts have been credited with eight drops over the previous two weeks, and the slow starts are becoming a disturbing trend. At San Diego, the Colts settled for field goals on the first and last drives of the first half. The previous week against Seattle, they fell into a 12-0 deficit after opening the game with three straight three-and-outs. Give Manning an opening like that, and its game over as players such as Wayne know all too well. But the Colts have been one of the leagues most resilient teams since Paganos arrival. They went from 2-14 in 2011, when Manning missed the season with a nerve injury, to 11-5 under Luck last season -- tied for the second-greatest one-season improvement in league history. They did that as Pagano spent most of the season battling cancer. Indy still has not lost two straight under Pagano, a streak they kept intact by winning at defending NFC champion San Francisco in Week 3, and they have won nine of their past 10 home games. Theyve just never had to rebound on a short week. "Again, Sunday cant come quick enough," Pagano said. "You play a West Coast game on Monday night, you deal with it as things come. Well put a plan together and get these guys back, get some guys back hopefully and get them healthy and recharged and all those type of things and, hopefully, get ready to play a good ball game on Sunday night."
