The 20-year-old Toronto FC defender has been rewarded for his consistent displays at left back in recent weeks with a place in Stephen Harts squad for the matches next month. Morgan joins Toronto FC teammates Julian de Guzman and Terry Dunfield in the squad. There are a total of six players based in Major League Soccer included in the 22 man squad for the matches at St. Lucia on October 5th and against Puerto Rico at BMO Field on October 11th. Since making his MLS debut as a substitute late in Toronto FCs home opener win over Portland in March, Morgan has worked his way into Head Coach Aron Winters starting line-up. He has made 11 league appearances in his rookie year, starting six games and picking up two assists. Morgan has performed consistently well in a team that has struggled defensively and is benefitting from having a run of games in the first team. He also fits well into Winters system using his pace to get forward down the left and has shown himself to be equally as comfortable playing as a left back of further forward on the left side of midfield. When he arrived in Toronto in January, Aron Winter pledged to give young Canadian players a chance and to invest heavily in youth development. Morgans rise to the senior team is an early sign that those commitments can bear fruit. "Ashtone was in camp with the Under 23 squad and I had opportunity to work with him closely," Canada Head Coach Stephen Hart told me Thursday. "I thought it was a good time to bring him in seeing as we need some coverage in that position." "Being in the squad will give him the chance to get experience with the senior team and show him the standard that is needed at this level. I flew into Toronto on Tuesday and watched him in the game against Pumas. He did well defensively and offensively he likes to get forward. His game shows a maturity level where I believe he can get into the team and perform well." Along with Morgan, 19-year-old Thornhill native Joseph Di Chiara also gets a first call to represent his country at senior level. Di Chiara is a midfielder who plays professionally in the Russian Premier League for FC Krylia Sovetov Samara. "He looks composed and technically sound," said Hart. "He keeps the ball moving through the midfield. I think we can bring him into the camp for these games and take a close look at him." If Di Chiara plays in either of the matches he will be the first teenager to appear for Canada in a World Cup Qualifier since 2004. Other changes to the squad from the first two World Cup Qualifying games  earlier this month include the return of striker Olivier Occean and centreback Adam Straith.
