CALGARY -- Brendan Shinnimin piled up points in 2011-12 at a rate that hasnt been reached in the Western Hockey League in more than a decade. Cyrus Kouandjio Blue Jersey . Shinnimin was recognized for his outstanding season with a pair of trophies at the WHL awards luncheon Wednesday. The Tri-City Americans forward captured both the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the WHLs player of the year and the Bob Clarke Trophy as the leagues top scorer. "Obviously you look at the Western Hockey League and the guys that they produce and even the young guys coming up and its a huge honour," said Shinnimin, who scored 58 goals and added 76 assists in 69 games. "For me to be able to earn player of the year and top scorer it feels good and its something Ive worked for (in) my five-year junior career." Shinnimins point total was the highest for a WHL player since the 1998-99 season when Pavel Brendl of the Calgary Hitmen also had 134 points. Not bad for a player who was never chosen in the WHL Bantam Draft. "Not being drafted there and being told I was too small, (that) I was never going to play, it made me want to make it even more," said the five-foot-10, 175-pound centre, who beat out Emerson Etem of the Medicine Hat Tigers to earn player of the year accolades. "To be able to have that drive is something that you cant find in everyone. I think Ive developed that just from playing in the Western Hockey League and just trying to follow a dream." Although Shinnimin was never selected in the NHL Entry Draft, the 21-year-old Winnipeg native recently signed a contract with the Phoenix Coyotes. "To win these two awards and then to eventually sign with the Phoenix Coyotes is a dream come true," said Shinnimin, who will join the Coyotes for their playoff drive although, he doesnt expect to play in any games this post-season. "Its obviously a huge opportunity to just be able to practise with the guys and to be around the team and see what it takes to get to that next level and what kind of lifestyle that they live. To be able to watch some outstanding playoff hockey, its going to be quite the experience." Also on Wednesday, Alex Petrovic of the Red Deer Rebels won the Bill Hunter Memorial Trophy as leagues top defenceman, while Tyler Bunz of the Tigers took the Del Wilson Trophy as the WHLs goaltender of the year. "Its just a great honour," said Bunz, a fifth-round pick of the Edmonton Oilers in the 2010 NHL draft. "Im looking forward to moving on with my career and using this as a backbone for confidence." Mark Stone of the Brandon Wheat Kings took home the Brad Hornung Trophy as most sportsmanlike player, while Sam Reinhart of the Kootenay Ice captured the Jim Piggot Memorial Trophy as the leagues rookie of the year. "Its really excited seeing Stone and Shinnimin and all the top guys in this league," Reinhart said. "Ive got a long way to go to be like them. It was a great experience for me coming here." Taylor Vause of the Swift Current Broncos won the Doug Wickenheiser Memorial Trophy as the WHL humanitarian of the year, while Reid Gow of the Spokane Chiefs captured the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy as the leagues scholastic player of the year. The Edmonton Oil Kings were recognized as the WHL scholastic team of the year and the Moose Jaw Warriors won the WHL marketing and communications award. Tri-City bench boss Jim Hiller won the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as WHL coach of the year, while Edmonton general manager Bob Green took home the Lloyd Saunders Memorial Trophy as the leagues top executive. Although Edmonton finished first in the league with a 50-15-7 record for 107 points and have gone 12-1 so far in the playoffs, Green said the Oil Kings wont be satisfied until they can pull off what the Ice and Hitmen have done the previous two seasons when their Eastern Conference rivals captured the Ed Chynoweth Cup as WHL champions. "We havent broke new ground or anything," Green said. "Weve got a ways to go yet before we achieve what those teams have achieved. The next series is going to go a long ways to determining that." The WHL championship series will starts Thursday when the Oil Kings host the Portland Winterhawks in Game 1. Nickell Robey Bills Jersey . -- UFC president Dana White has dismissed Georges St-Pierres concerns about drug testing, calling them ridiculous and "a little kooky. Manny Lawson Jersey . -- Ryan Mallett played solidly in his first chance at quarterback for the New England Patriots.SINGAPORE -- Karrie Webb and Angela Stanford were so close down the stretch Saturday at the HSBC Womens Champions, matching each other birdie for birdie, that Stanford only sees one way to get the advantage in Sundays final round. "Im going to send Webbie a six-pack (of beer) tonight," she said. Webb wasnt sure that would help. "Ill probably drink one and go to sleep," the Australian veteran said. The two players set up a Sunday showdown between former HSBC champions after finishing off their third rounds with identical birdies over three of the last five holes Saturday to separate themselves slightly from the rest of the crowded leaderboard. Webb, the 2011 winner, shot a 70 to move to 11-under 205, one stroke ahead of 2012 champion Stanford, who had a 69. They both have a chance to be the first repeat champion of the tournament, although on two different courses. Both players picked up their first HSBC crown at Singapores Tanah Merah Country Club and this years event is being played at the Sentosa Golf Club. Still, Stanford said, there are enough other quality players within striking range after a momentum-shifting day that anybody could claim the title. "Its really not worth looking at (the leaderboard)," she said. "You just know a lot of people are going to be at the top." Among those chasing Webb and Stanford are Spains Azahara Munoz, who fired an eagle and four birdies for a 5-under 67, the low round of the day; and Taiwans Teresa Lu, who gave up her LPGA membership in 2010 to concentrate on playing in Japan. Both are tied for third at 8-under 208. Americas Paula Creamer, who briefly held the lead with Webb and Munoz on Saturday, had six birdies to go with three bogeys to sit in fifth place at 7 under. Morgan Pressel of the United States was at 6 under, Norways Suzann Pettersen was another stroke back at 5 under, and Swedens Caroline Hedwall and South Koreas Na Yeon Choi were in joint eighth at 4 under. Bruce Smith Blue Jersey. Webb, a seven-time major winner, led the first two rounds in Singapore, but started out slowly on Saturday. She played her front nine at even par and then bogeyed the 10th hole to go to 1 over, allowing the rest of the field to close the gap. "Even when I was not giving myself a lot of good birdie opportunities early on, I had to tell myself its Saturday, theres plenty of golf left to be played and just to be patient," she said. "And fortunately I listened to myself for a change." Webb turned it around on the 153-yard, par-3 14th hole, where she struck her tee shot to within a couple feet of the hole for an easy birdie putt. Next came a chip shot from the fairway on the 16th which rolled in for birdie to give her a two-stroke lead again. Stanford stayed with Webb, though, as the other challengers fell back. Not to be outdone on the 14th, the American placed her tee shot even closer than Webbs -- a mere inches -- leading to birdie. She matched Webbs birdie again on the 16th, and both players closed the round with birdies on the 18th. If either veteran slips in the final round, however, Munoz and Lu are right behind them. Both players are looking for their second LPGA titles. Munoz captured her only tournament at the 2012 Sybase Match Play Championship, while Lu won hers at last years Mizuno Classic. Defending champion Stacy Lewis disappointing week, meanwhile, looks likely to end her streak of 13 consecutive top-10 finishes on the LPGA Tour. Lewis shot a 73 on Saturday, leaving her far down the leaderboard in joint-42nd place. Lewis, the reigning Womens British Open champion, is only three away from matching Webbs LPGA record of 16 consecutive top-10 finishes, set in 1998-99. cheap jerseys from china cheap jerseys ' ' '
