RED DEER, Alta. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . -- Its hard to concentrate on curling well when youre wondering how your kids are. Playing in a Canadian womens championship means mobilizing childcare for the moms in the field. Not only do the majority of women take vacation from their jobs to participate in the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, but so do husbands and grandparents. They either man the fort at home or play "pass the baby" during draws at the Enmax Centrium. "If I didnt have them, theres absolutely no way I could be here," said Saskatchewan third Lana Vey, mother of six-month-old son Hudson. Husband Dale Nagrampa and parents Dean and Karen do laps around the arena with Hudson in a stroller while Vey throws stones. At least seven curlers in the field have babies less than a year old. Theres several more with school-aged children. Saskatchewan second Roberta Materi has seven-year-old triplets dressed in green and watching her games. Jolene Campbell, the alternate for defending champion Amber Holland, says husband Greg, her sister and her parents have been bouncing nine-month-old Stella on their knees a lot this week. Its a life she says Greg signed up for. "Its something, honestly, when I met my husband I said Heres the deal. I love you and I want to marry you and have kids, but that means youll be on the road, " Campbell said. "It was like a pre-negotiated thing." The women are on the ice twice a day and when theyre not curling, they rest and prepare for their next game. In order to focus on winning a national championship, they off-load responsibility for their children on to other caretakers. Alberta third Beth Iskiw says husband Blayne is on his own minding Allie, 5, and Nate, 3, in Red Deer. The children were sick this week and Blayne also did work from a distance for his Alberta Health Services job, Iskiw said. "Honestly I dont even quite know what hes doing, but he just said he worked it out and hes here," she marvelled. "Hes been juggling sick kids, which is even harder than what it would normally be." Infants are easier to manage than pre-schoolers in some ways, but the nursing mothers are certainly needed by their offspring. "I thought it would be a lot harder, but it hasnt been too bad," Vey said. "I try to get in a feed between my games. "Hes good enough that Im able to just pass him off to his dad again and I can focus on the curling again. It hasnt been as difficult as I thought it would be because I have all the help. Theres no way I could do it on my own." While Hudson might not notice extended separations from his mom, she does. "I think you have a bit of mommy guilt," Vey admitted. "I know theres nothing wrong with him and hes fine, but I think hes still so young that I feel bad being away from him for that long. "Its because were together every day for how many hours and then hes not seeing me for a whole day almost." Heather Smith-Daceys husband Mark is coaching her Nova Scotia team this week. Her parents Al and Elaine arrived in Halifax from New Brunswick prior to their departure to stay with sons Carter, 4, and Ty, 8. "The last time I played in Red Deer, I had Ty here and he was four months old," Smith-Dacey recalled. "Just the whole breast feeding, that was my biggest challenge because Mark was staying with him in another hotel. Wed bring the milk bag to the rink and do the exchange. "Its a reality that men dont have to worry about and it makes the game really different for women." Pre-schoolers find long separations from their mother hard. Iskiw makes a point of spending at least a few minutes with her children after each draw. "My husband is a former competitive curler too, so he knows the importance of me being in game mode and getting prepared," she said. "He totally understands the whole deal. The kids dont understand, so they need me for a couple of minutes just to say hi. "(Blayne) and I talked before the event about how to do that. Right after the game, I can see them for a minute and say hi and they have a chance to give me their colouring." Smith-Dacey says the advent of Skype helps her children stay connected to her, but her youngest was upset when she left Halifax for almost two weeks of curling. "After two days in, hes fine and sees me on TV and hes cheering," she said. The national championships are high-stakes curling, with a berth in the world championships and a return trip to next years Scotties among the rewards. It takes a certain single-mindedness to win it, but Smith-Dacey says teams have to accommodate children too. "The rest of the team needs to be OK with someone on the team having kids too because it is very different," she said. "My commitment to curling is huge, but my kids always come first." Cheap Jerseys .
