"The Press almost unanimously refuses to call the Indian by his proper name. He is “Ramsamy”; he is “Mr. Sammy”; he is “Mr. Coolie”; he is “he black man”. And these offensive epithets have become so common that they (at any rate one of them, “coolie) are used even in the sacred precincts of the Courts."

“A general belief seems to prevail in the colony that the Indians are little better, if at all, than the savages or natives of Africa. Even the children are taught to believe in that manner, with the result that the Indian is being dragged down to the position of a raw Kaffir.”

(Reference: The Collected Works of Mahatma Gandhi, Government of India (CWMG), Vol I, p. 150)

Gandhi complained during one of his campaigns for the rights of Indians settled in South Africa. "We could understand not being classed with whites, but to be placed on the same level as the Natives seemed too much to put up with. Kaffirs are as a rule uncivilized -- the convicts even more so. They are troublesome, very dirty and live like animals."

On white Afrikaners and Indians, he wrote: "We believe as much in the purity of races as we think they do."

(Have not found reference for these.)
