Influenza virus circulates year round and generally peaks from January to March, and outbreaks can occur as late as May.
wane v. 变小, 亏缺, (月亮)呈下弦
Myth 5. Patients vaccinated last year do not need another dose this season since the strains in the vaccine have not changed.
Fact. Seasonal vaccination offers immunity against the strains contained in the vaccine and lasts throughout the entire season. However, immunity wanes(变弱) over the course of a year, so patients should be vaccinated yearly.
waning:
Patients may no longer be protected this season due to waning levels of immunity over time。
contraindication [.kɔntrə'indikeiʃən, .kɔntrə'ində.keiʃən] n. 〈医〉禁忌症候
Egg allergy is no longer an absolute contraindication to administration of inactivated
vaccine, if proper precautions are taken.

All pregnant women should receive inactivated vaccine in any trimester.

thimerosal [θai'merəsɔ:l, θai'merə.sɔ:l]
Myth 7. Influenza vaccine contains mercury, whichis unsafe.
Fact. Influenza vaccines that come in multidose vials contain a small amount of thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative, but single-dose vials do not. Recent studies showed that the small concentration of thimerosal in vaccines does not cause harm or lead to autism and is usually only associated with minor local injection-site reactions like redness and swelling.
