关于Mike Nichols 与 Emma Thompson 的 “Wit“ 这算不上书评，因为并未读原著，1999 普立策 winning play, by Margaret Edson. 但有Emma Thompson 参与做编剧的片子，通常当书来读，更何况这部片子大部分是独白。 晦涩艰难的话题，生与死，由一个研究了它一生的学者来亲历由生到死，intellectual 层面上对salvation anxiety 的理解和outwit不能抵挡身体亲历的痛楚，那末从此岸到彼岸这中间，我们靠什末来支撑？我们终究会被得救，但我们如何面对它（salvation anxiety）？ 这里永远是一个paradox 。我们的理性曾是我们直面种种虚无的凭借，甚至滋生出骄傲，但我们也最终被它桎枯，无路可逃。我们以为我们能够，我们甚至构想我们胜利到达彼岸时的欢呼，Death (Capital D), 再用一个惊叹号：！ 但，这不是真相。 Vivian 是研究17 世纪metaphysical poet John Donne 的 资深学者。 我们都认为莎士比亚有一种supernatural的力量参透human nature, 但与John Donne 相比，’莎士比亚 象 Hallmark Card.’ (剧中语)。John Donne is deadly intense, 他的诗就是用种种metaphor 来coax new perspective。这是一个自制的迷宫，由一个conceit 到另一个conceit，环环相扣，试图从现世到永生之间找到一种凭借来面对死亡， 亦或 ultimate judgment。 那麽John Donne 找到了麽？ And death shall be no more, (comma) Death, (comma) thou shalt die. ----John Donne，Holy Sonnet X 原来这只是一个pause, 如同comma。真相是：life, death, eternal life…..they are connected. It is very simple, no insuperable barriers. Just a pause, a comma. It is not wit, but truth. 这是个paradox，截然对立的两面，共存于一体， 生死原是河的两岸，他们是一体。但年轻的Vivian 不这样看， And Death, (capital D) shall be no more; (semi colon) Death, (capital D) thou shalt die! (exclamation mark) -------The edition of John Donne Vivian chose. 这是drama，which caters to our illusion we create for ourselves to suffocate our fear. 我们在惶恐地掩饰，用exclamation mark这种 hysterical punctuation来掩饰such simple profound meaning of death----a pause. Vivian 用她一贯uncompromising 的态度直面死亡，她永远都可以到达，她从不计较代价，她付得起，即使是生命。当超强剂量的治疗终于危及到她的免疫系统，在饱受疼痛煎熬的时候，她依然在做她生命处境的观照者(onlooker)，她说：这是一个paradox，我的treatment 在破坏我的健康，paradox is very hard to teach. 她对死亡有备而来，她具备一切关于生与死的knowledge, 或者说是wit，甚至the tendency to outwit。当病魔的痛楚向她袭来时，她在recite John Donne的诗。她洞察这种treatment 的后果，她的态度是：let it go… 象John Donne的诗，which begins with a valiant struggle with death, calling all the forces of intellect and drama to vanquish the enemy. It is ultimately about overcoming the seeing insuperable barriers separating life, death and eternal life. Barrier, barrier无处不在，但我是一种force, uncompromising, I can conquer.----这是Vivian 的 self-portrait. Vivian 接受治疗的过程是她从一个研究者到研究者的subject 的过程，她一辈子研究John Donne的诗，主题是生与死， 现在她自己是主题。她从年轻的residency doctor 身上看到了自己。 residency doctor 对cancer 的fascination 就象她对John Donne的诗。But something is missing…A sense of humanity, human kindness. 因为John Donne 的toughness and intensity, 她一直都在overcoming the seeing barriers，以至于她自己变成another barrier, alienating her students from the touch of humanity though a poetry. 如此简单深邃的东西，她竟然错过了。 在弥留之际，Vivian 不再拒绝痛感，在从前的老师怀里痛哭，simply stating the truth, not drama anymore----I am in pain. 不再让老师recite John Donne的诗了，salvation 近了，God最终会找到她，象mummy boney 找到 baby boney 一样。原本就没有什末insuperable barriers，只是一个pause，death 之后是eternal life。 death shall be no more, (comma) Death, (comma) thou shalt die.
