約翰·施特勞斯，奧地利作曲家。 1825年10月25日出生於維也納。施特勞斯自幼愛好音樂，不顧父親老約翰·施特勞斯的嚴厲反對，成為職業音樂家。他19歲時就舉辦了一系列音樂會，並在各地巡迴演出，獲得的成就使他很快就與父親齊名。 1848年，他訪問羅馬尼亞舉辦音樂會，這期間他在當地居民的鼓動下推翻了奧地利領事。在維也納發生革命的時日里，他是國民軍樂隊的隊長，指揮了《馬賽曲》和他自己創作的革命進行曲和革命圓舞曲。他的名聲在革命以後愈益提高。 1851年開始了富有成就的去國外的第一次巡迴演出。自1853年起，斯特勞斯擔任宮廷舞會音樂指揮；1863—1870年，擔任奧匈帝國皇室和王室的宮廷舞會樂隊隊長之職。 1870年，作為圓舞曲和舞曲作曲家處於榮譽高峰的斯特勞斯(他當時已經寫作了大約340首圓舞曲和其他舞曲)轉向舞台樂的創作。他寫了17部輕歌劇、一部歌劇和一部芭蕾舞曲，在這些作品中，絕大部分都由於其低劣的歌劇腳本而宣告失敗，或很快以半失敗而煙消雲散。 1872年，施特勞斯做了轟動一時的美國之行。在1894年舉行慶祝斯特勞斯從事藝術活動50週年慶祝會時，他收到了來自全世界的祝賀和授予他名譽會員稱號的證書，這一切顯示出這是一次真正勝利的盛會。 1899年6月3日，他在短時期臥病以後在維也納去世。
