　　 民歌、民謠、民樂，於國際民間音樂協會之解釋定義為「經過口傳過程發展起來的普羅大眾音樂」，也就是該音樂散布過程，純粹是由演奏者或音樂接收者記錄教習，並親自相傳所得。其範圍包含歌曲、簡單樂器演奏，甚至舞曲曲調與步伐。

美國民謠，也稱作「根音樂」，是一個有廣泛範圍概念，其中包括藍草音樂、鄉村音樂、福音音樂、舊時代音樂、藍調、印地安音樂。此音樂冠以「美國的」，一方面因為其出於美國，另一方面儘管原來源於外域，但其後來發展於美國。稱為「根音樂」因為是音樂根源基本元素在美國而得到發展，如搖滾、節奏藍調和爵士樂。民歌的主題範圍從戰爭，工作，公民權利和經濟困境到無意義，諷刺，當然還有愛情。
