英籍合唱團佛利伍麥克在1967年成立之初是一個以吉他手Peter Green為主導的藍調搖滾團體。經過多次的換將與音樂風格的嘗試，團中鼓手Mick Fleetwood、貝斯手John McVie、鍵盤手兼主唱Christine McVie漸成重心。 1974年美國籍主唱Bob Welch離團後，原活躍於加州的男女二重唱Lindsey Buckingham和Stevie Nicks加入，於是開創了佛利伍麥克合唱團最璀璨輝煌的年代。憑藉Lindsey、Stevie、Christine鐵三角的作曲主力與三位輪流擔任主唱的特色加上明亮、輕快的搖滾風使該團不僅在1975-87年間發表的五張錄音室專輯和一張現場演唱實況專輯張張精彩、銷售奇佳，他們與老鷹合唱團同為加州搖滾最具代表性的樂團。憑藉Lindsey、Stevie、Christine鐵三角的作曲主力與三位輪流擔任主唱的特色加上明亮、輕快的加州搖滾風使佛利伍麥克合唱團不僅在1975-87年間寫下該團多項記錄，在整個流行樂的發展上亦是舉足輕重，成為加州搖滾最具代表性的樂團之一。

British blues guitarist Peter Green formed Fleetwood Mac in 1967, naming the group after bassist John McVie and drummer Mick Fleetwood. Over the next eight years, the band evolved in unpredictable ways, losing and gaining key members from album to album—including Christine McVie on keyboards and vocals—and changing their sound from tough blues to sweet pop-rock. When Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks joined in 1975, Fleetwood Mac became one of the biggest bands in the world, with a string of classic albums—especially the hugely successful Rumours—that defined the sound of the era.

The Essential Fleetwood Mac is a comprehensive compilation of recordings from British blues rock band Fleetwood Mac's early recordings made with Blue Horizon Records. It includes most of the tracks from their first two albums Fleetwood Mac and Mr. Wonderful, plus non-album singles and a few rarities. The album is part of the ongoing Sony BMG series The Essential. The album was released in 2007.
