　　阿瑟·柯南道尔作品经典的侦探小说《福尔摩斯探案全集》，包括《冒险史》系列、《新探案》系列、《回忆录》系列、《归来记》系列、《血字研究》、《恐怖谷》、《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》、《四签名》。
　　柯南道尔在29岁时写出《血字的研究》，次年出版。两年之后，柯南道尔出版了《四签名》。从1891年至1894年的三年中，柯南道尔先后写出了《波希米亚丑闻》、《红发会》、《身份案》、《博斯科姆伯溪谷的秘密》、《五个桔核》、《歪嘴男人》、《银色马》等24个短篇，并结集出版。1894年底，柯南道尔在《最后一案》中让福尔摩斯死去。在读者的呼吁中，他又在1901年写出《巴斯克维尔的猎犬》。1903年柯南道尔写出了《空屋》，让福尔摩斯死而复活，再次活跃在读者面前。并先后写出了《归来记》、《恐怖谷》、《最后致意》、《新探案》等侦探故事。

　　福尔摩斯是生活在“雾都”伦敦一座简陋公寓里的一位极具侦探天才的人物。他善于运用医学、心理学、史学、逻辑学，重视调查和研究。他目光敏锐，思维严密而独特,是跨时代的名侦探。

　　华生在刚刚认识福尔摩斯时，还不知道他的职业（侦探顾问），但对福尔摩斯很感兴趣，于是他列了一张福尔摩斯的知识面的清单——

　　02. 哲学知识——无。
　　03. 天文学知识——无。
　　04. 政治知识——浅薄。
　　05. 植物学知识——不全面，对莨菪、鸦片和一切毒性植物很有研究。实用的园艺学则全不知道。
