digital piano vs. acoustic piano

My daughter just started piano lessons. We are looking to buy a piano for her to practice. A new decent acoustic piano we are interestd in costs around $6,000 while a new digital piano with features we like is under $3,000. I am more for the acoustic piano but my husband believes a digital piano is a wiser choice for now, given that we are not sure how long my daughter will be interested in playing the piano. He insists that an acoustic piano is not only much for expensive but also requires more maintenance (tuning at least once a year, etc.)

The digital piano saleman told us a good digital piano sounds (at least to a beginner) just as good as an acoustic piano while the acoustic piano saleman says it\'s a waste of money to buy a digital piano.

I would really appreciate any comments and suggests on this.
