Foreign envoys Mustang visit irks Nepal Maoists
TGW

“Ambassadors from various western countries including Nancy J., Powell-the US ambassador to Nepal, are currently visiting the upper mustang region terming their trip as a strictly personal one”.

News reports quoting Maoists’ sources nonetheless, claim that the US ambassador has primarily arrived in Lomanthang- the capital of Upper Mustang, to meet the Former King of Mustang Jigme Parwal Bista.

“The meeting is scheduled to take place in the old palace of the former King of Mustang whose family had migrated all the way from Tibet”, say sources.

Mustang adjoins Tibet and thus is a sensitive place for China, security wise.

On the other hand, the Local administration has called the trip of the US ambassador as a strictly personal one.

“This is her strictly personal visit…we have no idea why she is here”, reports claim quoting chief District officer Sundar Raj Aryal.

“She has told us that she will stay in the region for two weeks and also she has plans to trek in the Annapurana trails…that’s all”, Mr. Aryal claims.
The Maoists sources also claim that Rakesh Sood the Indian ambassador and Gilles Henry Garrault the French ambassador to Nepal are also scheduled to arrive in the Upper-Mustang area shortly.
The Rajdhani Daily April 1, 2009 on the other hand, claims that the French envoy is already in Mustang.

“At a time when Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal is on a foreign trip, the activities of the foreign envoys mainly to meet the former King Bista- a supporter of the Free Tibet movement, have made us suspicious,” says Maoists’ area in charge Krishna Prasad Sharma.

“The US and India had sponsored an armed struggle in Mustang after the freedom of Tibet”, says Sharma adding, “It is likely that the visit of the foreign envoys could be linked to the bitter past”, Sharma adds.

Reports also claim that at a time when a contingent of Indian Army men led by Lieutenant S.M. Chauhan is already in the region to scale Mt. Dhaulagri, the visit of ambassadors has made us even more suspicious, Sharma concludes.

“Their (ambassadors) activities are being watched”, says Sharma.
