Greece\'s NBG seeks local or foreign partners- report
2010-07-17 17:07 (UTC)

ATHENS, July 17 (Reuters) - National Bank of Greece, , Greece\'s top lender, plans merging with either one of its two top domestic rivals or seek a foreign partner, newspaper Vima reported on Saturday, citing senior NBG executives it did not name.

NBG will move in the next ten days to seek partners in Greece or abroad, Vima said, citing other sources close to the bank\'s Chairman Vassilis Rapanos. NBG officials were not available to comment on the report.

The bank\'s potential domestic partner will be either Greece\'s No.2 lender EFG Eurobank or Alpha Bank , the third-biggest bank, Vima reported.

Media speculation about possible bank mergers in Greece has increased since the government earlier this month urged banks to consolidate to better cope with financial crisis.

On June 12, NBG denied it was in merger talks with any Greek bank. The lender\'s top management is named by the government.
