odd 奇怪古怪 is a common word, odious is not, there is a trick to distinguish all these: odd, even, odious...
Current Schools do not teach new words in an advanced way, many people incl. the best seller authors are mediocre, in fact I belong to this category generally as well, but in my speciality,  I am distinguished. A stunning success is ahead of me.
