Long Description:
About the sculptor, taken from the following website (visit link)
FRANCESCO SOMAINI
Born on August 6, 1926 in Lomazzo, in the Como province, where he lives and works to this day. Somaini manages to distinguish himself as a sculptor at a young age: he is invited for the first time to the Bienniale of Venice back in 1950, only two years after his debut at a public exhibition. But it is not until 1954-55 that Somaini\'s sculpture becomes really autonomous, with the informal works that will be developed until about 1964. From that moment on, without abandoning the idea of a plastic that goes looking for its form, his works become more structured, more architectural, at the same time as a new interest for the monument and a new series of public works commissioned both in Italy and abroad: some of the most important works are the monuments to Italy\'s sailors in Milan, the Great vertical sculpture in Baltimore and the Phoenix in Atlanta. Starting in the middle of the 1970\'s, Somaini creates his famous Tracks and starts to slowly return to the figure, which today arises domineeringly from matter as we can see in his most colossal work, the giant Door of Europe, located on the ancient road of the Gottardo.
