宏扬道德 回复 悄悄话 回复 'stillthere' 的评论 : Yes, I've been trying to guess his motive, why did he do this? For what? Money and sex did not seem to be the answer ... there is no report that he and the 4 victims have any conflicts before. Maybe just to show he is so intelligent, that the cops cannot catch him? No matter what, his crime is so evil and pathetic ...
stillthere 回复 悄悄话 回复 '宏扬道德' 的评论 :

Yes, motive?

The plea deal does not require him to explain his motive or provide a full confession beyond admitting guilt.

There’s still a chance that more details could emerge during Kohberger’s sentencing hearing on July 23, when prosecutors may present a fuller narrative of the evidence and events.
宏扬道德 回复 悄悄话 回复 'stillthere' 的评论 : Thanks for the update, I also just read today that Kohberger "admits to Idaho college killings in plea hearing".
My biggest question is still, why?? Why did he commit this horrific crime?

Kohberger to Plead Guilty in Killings
Family of a victim says pact allows accused to avoid the death penalty

The Wall Street Journal
1 Jul 2025
BY JOSEPH PISANI AND ALYSSA LUKPAT

Clockwise, the victims Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, Madison Mogen and Ethan Chapin. The students were stabbed to death in 2022 at an off-campus residence of an Idaho college.

Bryan Kohberger, the man charged with killing four University of Idaho students in 2022, is expected to plead guilty as part of an agreement with prosecutors that would allow him to avoid the death penalty, according to one of the victims’ families.

Kohberger, 30 years old, was set to go on trial in August for the fatal stabbings of the students in an off-campus residence in the small college town of Moscow, Idaho.

The family of one of the victims, Kaylee Goncalves, said they were frustrated with prosecutors and criticized them for sending an email about the deal with a letter attached instead of calling them directly.

“That’s how Latah County’s Prosecutor’s Office treats murder victims’ families,” the family wrote in a statement sent by their lawyer Shanon Gray. “Adding insult to injury, they’re rushing the plea, giving families just one day to coordinate and appear at the courthouse.”

Authorities arrested Kohberger, a graduate student at Washington State University, at his parents’ house in Pennsylvania after a weekslong search for a suspect.

Kohberger was extradited to Idaho, where he was charged with state felony charges of four counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Xana Kernodle, 20 years old, Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21, and Goncalves, 21.

He was also charged with one count of felony burglary. He initially pleaded not guilty in 2023.

It was unclear whether the agreement with prosecutors would change the charges.

Prosecutors didn’t respond to requests for comment. Neither did Kohberger’s lawyer.
