I write down some thoughts from my recent job search. Hope they can be of some use in your adventure.

Have a plan

“Begin with the end in mind” is one of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” as Stephen Covey suggests in his book. Write down the keys values you are looking for and rank them in the order of their importance to you, such as higher salary, flexibility to work from home, longer vacation time, company culture, etc. You will be more clear and specific on what you want and hence more focused in your search to get there.

Build your competence and present them well

Acquire skills that are desirable on the market in your field. Keep them up to date all the time. Present them clearly and effectively in your resume and get ready your stories to tell at interview. A Lot have been said on this subject in this forum.

Work towards your goal with confidence.

Most of the time, the people who interview you do not necessarily remember what you said during an interview. But they have impression of how you said it. Be yourself. Be confident.

Allow yourself 3-6 months time to find a good fit. It could take much shorter than that. But wanting a job right now will make you look desperate. Always keep this in mind: You will definitely find a position that fits your qualifications.

Networking

Always have at least 5-7 contacts in active conversation. Follow up with them every 4 weeks even when there is no opening at the time. This way you won’t be disappointed or distracted even when your strongest lead falls apart.

Some recruiters are annoying and not trust worthy from my experience. They misuse my contact information and do not respect my time. However, they may be able to connect you with your next employer. I would encourage you to use them, but choose carefully a few good, professional ones who can really be of help.

NEVER drop your search until you actually start a new job. You can even keep it going after your start.

Negotiating terms

When it comes to compensation negotiation, the rule is to always negotiate. But the critical point is TIMING. Never bring anything up before you get the offer. Once get the offer, negotiate immediately, better in the same day. Do not delay. Again know clearly what you want before hand.

Gratitude

Show appreciation to people who lend you a hand. Thanks God for what’s unwinding in your way. That is when the results double your efforts.
