Health Savings Accounts and Archer MSAs
Health savings accounts are tax-exempt accounts that you set up with a qualified trustee. You can use the funds to pay for, or reimburse, certain medical expenses you have. You must be an eligible individual to qualify for an HSA. In order to qualify for an HSA you must meet the following requirements:
- You must have a high deductible health plan, on the first day of the month
- You must not have any other health coverage, with certain exclusions
- You must not be enrolled in Medicare
- You cannot be claimed, or be eligible to be claimed, as a dependent on
someone else's tax return
An Archer medical savings account is a tax-exempt trust or custodial account that you set up with a U.S. financial institution. You can save money in this account to use exclusively for future medical expenses. Archer MSAs were created to help self-employed individuals and employees of certain small employers meet the medical care costs of the account holder and family.
Distributions from these accounts are reported to you on form 1099-SA. You can enter distributions reported to you on any 1099-SAs you received here. We'll help you find out if any of your distributions are taxable.
Contributions to your HSA can be made by your employer, you, or both. Contributions to your MSA can be made either by your employer, or by you. Contributions by your employer are usually reported to you on your form W-2 in box 12. Contributions you made are handled in this area of TurboTax. We'll ask you some questions and figure out your HSA/MSA deduction for this year.
