Rita had been keeping the books for fifty years."She knows everything there is to know," the others told newcomers,"The boss depends on her." Rita was a creature of habit. Every morning she would pour her a cup of tea. Then, before setting down to work, she would look over her shoulder to make sure no one was close by before opening the first left-hand drawer of her a few inches and peering inside. Then she would shut and lock it. One night, Rita died in her sleep. Her curious colleagues qpened the locked drawer to clean it out. They found it empty except for a yellowed slip of paper pasted to the bottom. It read:
DEBITS GO ON THE LEFT; CREDIT GO ON THE RIGHT.
