Death Toll from Virus Hits 34 in China

The death toll in China from an outbreak of a severe intestinal virus that has sickened thousands of children now stands at 34.

China's official Xinhua news agency says two children died in the eastern province of Anhui, where the majority of the casualties have been recorded.

Earlier today (Friday), authorities said an eight-month-old girl in southern Guangdong province and an 18-month-old boy in Guangxi province died this week.

The outbreak has been traced to the "enterovirus 71" virus, which causes a severe form of hand, foot and mouth disease that can lead to high fever, paralysis and viral meningitis.

Xinhua says more than 24-thousand cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been reported this year.

UN Suspends Aid Flights to Burma After Government Seizes Supplies

The United Nations has suspended aid flights to Burma after authorities there seized all of its relief supplies flown into the military-ruled country to aid victims of last week's killer cyclone.

Officials with the UN's World Food Program say (today/ Friday) two shipments of food and equipment to Burma have been impounded. They say the Burmese government's behavior is unacceptable and that they have no choice but to suspend further aid shipments until the matter is resolved.

The Burmese government's actions are likely to further ignite international outrage. Burma has also refused to allow foreign aid workers into the country to help distribute aid to the hundreds of thousands who need it.

Burma has agreed to accept foreign aid, but insists that its own nationals be used to distribute relief supplies.

China says two more children have died of a severe intestinal virus, raising the nation's death toll to 30. The state-run Xinhua news agency reports today (Thursday) that the latest victims of "enterovirus 71" died on the southern island province of Hainan.

The outbreak has gripped the eastern province of Anhui, where 22 children died in the city of Fuyang. Children also have died in Guangdong, Zhejiang, Guangxi and Hunan.

The virus causes a severe form of hand, foot and mouth disease that can lead to high fever, paralysis and viral meningitis. Xinhua said Wednesday that nearly 20-thousand cases of hand, foot and mouth disease have been reported this year.

China and the World Health Organization have tried to calm people's fears about the virus, saying it is not a more virulent strain than seen before.

Dalai Lama Representatives Say Talks with China Constructive

Envoys for the Dalai Lama say China is willing to hold further talks about the situation in Tibet, despite major differences between the two sides. A spokesman for the Tibet government-in-exile, Thubten Samphel, tells VOA that during the recent talks in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen, each side made "concrete proposals." Samphel says the mood at the talks was different from previous meetings and notes that China's representatives appeared willing to address concerns of Tibetans living under Chinese rule.

He says envoys of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader urged China to release people who have been detained since Beijing's harsh crackdown on anti-government protests in Tibet in March, and provide medical treatment for those who were injured.

Health Officials Battling Child Disease in China

Chinese and international health officials say they are working closely together to fight a severe intestinal virus that has already killed 28 children in China. Speaking at a joint news conference today (Wednesday) in Beijing, a Chinese Health Ministry spokesman and the World Health Organization's top representative in China (Hans Troedsson) both said the disease was likely to peak in the coming months of June and July.

Officials say the numbers will also rise because of a new order to report all cases of the disease to the Ministry of Health. China has already reported nearly 16-thousand cases of people infected with hand, food and mouth disease. Today, two more children died from the disease.

China has confirmed it is tightening its visa requirements ahead of the Olympic Games in Beijing this year. Foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told reporters today (Tuesday) that Beijing is adopting tighter controls to ensure a safe environment during the Olympics.

Chinese and Tibetan sources say envoys of the Chinese government and the Tibetan government-in-exile have agreed to hold further talks, after meeting Sunday in the Chinese city of Shenzhen.

Chinese state media said the talks (between China's Zhu Weigun and Sitar and Tibet's Lodi Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen) were arranged after repeated requests from the side of Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. China has said the next round of talks will take place "at an appropriate time."

The official news agency, Xinhua, reported that the two Chinese envoys asked the Dalai Lama's representatives to take credible moves to stop plotting and inciting violence in Tibet, and disrupting the upcoming Olympic Games.

The Dalai Lama has said repeatedly that he is not behind the violence or the protests that recently have disrupted the procession of the Olympic torch in cities around the world.

Dalai Lama's Envoys Depart for Meeting in China

Envoys of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, are on their way to China for talks aimed at finding a solution to the situation in Tibet.

In a statement today (Friday), the Dalai Lama's office says the two envoys will arrive in China on Saturday for "informal talks with representatives of the Chinese leadership."

It says the envoys will convey the Dalai Lama's deep concerns about how China handled protests that started in Tibet in March and have since spread to other Tibetan regions of China. The envoys will also offer suggestions on how to bring peace to the region.

The meeting will be the first official contact between representatives of the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government since the protests turned violent. The two sides have met several times in the past, but with little improvement in relations.

Death Toll Rises from Lethal Virus Outbreak in Eastern China

Chinese state-run media says another child has died from an intestinal virus outbreak in eastern China, bringing the death toll to 21.

Xinhua news agency says all the victims lived in Fuyang City in Anhui province. The city is the epicenter of an outbreak of enterovirus 71 that has now sickened more than 29-hundred children since March. The outbreak was not reported until last week.

The young victims' symptoms include fever, blisters, ulcers in the mouth, and rashes on the hands and feet.

Xinhua says more than 700 remain hospitalized, 36 of them in serious condition. Nearly all of the cases have been among children younger than six, with most under two.

New Bridge Opens in China

China will officially open what is being described as one of the world's longest sea-crossing bridges today (Thursday) in the Yangtze River Delta.

State-run Xinhua news agency says the 36-kilometer bridge will span the Hangzhou Bay near China's financial and commercial hub, Shanghai. It will link Shanghai to the port city of Ningbo in Zhejiang province.

Xinhua says the bridge, will cut the length of the trip between Shanghai and Ningbo by 120 kilometers, and is expected to reduce traffic congestion in the booming economic region.

Construction on the bridge began in November 2003.

Chinese Stage Protests in Front of French Retail Outlet Stores

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in four Chinese cities today (Thursday) to express support for the Beijing Olympics and denounce international protests over the crackdown in Tibet.

State-run Xinhua news agency says the demonstrations took place outside stores belonging to French retail giant Carrefour in Changsha, capital of the province of Hunan, as well as the cities of Fuzhou, Chongquin, and Shenyang.

The supporters waved Chinese national flags and shouted slogans supporting the Olympics and denouncing Tibetan independence.

Carrefour has been the target of angry nationalist fervor since last month's relay of the Beijing Olympic torch in Paris, when pro-Tibetan demonstrators tried to snatch the flame from a wheelchair-bound Chinese athlete.

US Concerned About Prison Terms for Tibet Protesters

The United States says it is concerned about China's sentencing of 30 people to prison this week over their alleged involvement in recent Tibetan unrest. White House spokeswoman Dana Perino told reporters in Washington (Wednesday) that while the United States does not think anyone should break the law, it also believes in freedom of expression and assembly.

Perino says the U.S. is encouraged by China's offer late last week to open dialogue with representatives of Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. She also says she believes the Dalai Lama could help China calm tensions in the area.

On Tuesday, a court in Tibet sentenced 30 Tibetans from three years to life in prison for taking part in the unrest.

Chinese Authorities Link Train Crash to Olympic Construction

Chinese officials say railway construction ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics played a role in a deadly train crash this week in eastern China that killed 71 people and injured more than 400.

Investigators say one of the trains was traveling more than 131 kilometers-per-hour when it derailed (near the city of Zibo in Shandong province) and rammed into another train. A Zibo city spokesman (Li Chenggang) told reporters today (Wednesday) that the railway line in the area is being upgraded ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games.

He said a new line will make the traffic between Jinan and the coastal city of Qingdao much faster. Qingdao is the site of the sailing competition for the Summer Games.

Government investigators tell Chinese state media that train operators were told to slow down at the section of the track under construction before the accident took place.

A U.S.-based human rights group says lawyers working in China are facing increasing difficulties including harassment and jail for defending suspects and handling sensitive cases. In a report today (Tuesday), Human Rights Watch says lawyers handling cases that challenge the ruling Chinese Communist Party have been detained or arrested.

In one recent example, the report says lawyers who offered to defend Tibetan protesters accused of involvement in the recent unrest in Tibet were warned by the Chinese Ministry of Justice. The report says the lawyers were told they could face
disciplinary sanctions or lose renewal of their licenses.

China Imprisons 30 Over Tibetan Unrest

Chinese state media say a court in Tibet has sentenced 30 people for terms of three years to life for their roles in deadly riots and violence in the region last month. The official Xinhua news agency says (today/Tuesday) the Intermediate People's Court of Lhasa sentenced three of the men to life in prison.

China says a total of 18 innocent civilians and one police officer died after several days of rare peaceful protests in Lhasa turned violent on March 14th. It is difficult to verify the numbers as China has barred reporters from Lhasa since shortly after
the unrest occurred.

Tibet's Indian-based government-in-exile said today that it now estimates at least 203 Tibetans were killed in a crackdown by Chinese forces on anti-government protesters and rioters.

A senior Taiwanese politician has arrived in China where he is expected to meet with Chinese President Hu Jintao.

China's official Xinhua news agency reports that Lien Chan, the honorary chairman of Taiwan's Nationalist Party, arrived in Beijing today (Monday) for what is being called a private visit. Lien Chan is traveling with his wife, business leaders and former politicians.

In addition to Beijing, Lien will visit Chongqing (Sichuan province) and Wuhan (Hubei province) for sightseeing. His visit comes a little more than a month after the Nationalist Party won the presidential election in Taiwan.

President-elect Ma Ying-jeou supports stronger business and transportation ties with China. Since the March election, hopes have been running high in Taiwan that the two sides may be able to put aside their political differences and boost economic ties.

US Aircraft Carrier Kitty Hawk Docks in Hong Kong

The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk docked in Hong Kong today (Monday) for the first time since Beijing canceled a visit last November. U.S. Rear Admiral Richard Wren said that while the November episode was a disappointment, he was delighted to be back. He said the United States is still not completely satisfied with China's explanation of why the USS Kitty Hawk was denied entry in November.

Beijing says it denied the Kitty Hawk entry to Hong Kong because it had not followed correct procedures and did not have proper clearances.

Indonesia Holds Massive Bird Flu Drill

The head of the European Commission says he is opposed to any boycott of the upcoming Beijing Olympic games because of the ongoing crisis in Tibet. Jose Manuel Barroso expressed his views Friday after talks with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in Beijing. Mr. Barroso says he and Mr. Wen had frank discussions on Tibet, and that he hoped to "see positive developments soon."

Tensions have grown between both sides since China's harsh crackdown of anti-government protesters last month. The European Parliament had urged EU leaders to boycott the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in August unless Chinese leaders hold talks with Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. But Mr. Barroso says the games must be successful because they celebrate the world's youth.

Indonesia Holds Massive Bird Flu Drill

Indonesia has launched a massive bird flu drill to prepare for the possibility of a human-to-human outbreak of the deadly virus. The drill began Friday and involved a simulated outbreak of a pandemic of the disease. The exercise, which ends Sunday, began with a man contracting the disease on the resort island of Bali and will culminate with officials trying to prevent infected travelers from leaving the country and taking the virus overseas.

Most bird flu cases involve contact with infected poultry. Experts fear the virus could eventually mutate and be spread from human contact. Bird flu has hit Indonesia harder than any other country in the world, and its 107 deaths from the disease account for nearly half of the global total.

A former French prime minister has criticized the mayor of Paris for honoring Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. In comments to Chinese state-media today (Thursday) in Beijing, Jean-Pierre Raffarin said Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe's
action was a political mistake.

He was referring to the mayor's approval of a Paris city council decision to grant the Dalai Lama honorary French citizenship -- a move he said had hurt France's efforts to mend strained ties with China.

Chinese Supporters, Protesters Gather in Australia for Olympic Torch Relay

The Australian leg of the Olympic torch relay was successfully completed today (Thursday) in the capital city of Canberra without major incident. About 80 runners carried the torch along the heavily guarded 16-kilometer route. Authorities increased security to prevent a repeat of chaotic demonstrations that marred the torch's relay in London and Paris.

Thousands of supporters waving Chinese flags easily outnumbered protesters carrying Tibetan flags or placards criticizing Beijing's human rights record. Authorities say clashes broke out between the two groups, and at least five people were arrested, including one man who leaped from the crowd into the path of a torch carrier.

Olympic Torch Arrives in Australia

The Olympic flame has arrived in Australia for Thursday's Canberra leg of the torch relay, as the city prepares for major protests. A flight carrying the flame from Jakarta arrived Wednesday at a military airfield outside the Australian capital. Australian Aborigines played traditional music at a welcoming ceremony before the torch was taken to a secret location.

Pro-Tibet activists used lasers to project the words "Don't Torch Tibet" onto a bridge in Sydney.

China's ambassador to Australia Zhang Junsai told a local television station Tuesday that Chinese flame attendants will protect the flame with their bodies if it is attacked. But Canberra's top security official later confirmed Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's previous statement that the Chinese attendants will not be performing a security role.

China's official English-language newspaper, the China Daily, published an article by a deputy editor and Olympic torch spokesman defending the torch attendants.

US Warships to Arrive in Hong Kong

The U.S. aircraft carrier Kitty Hawk will dock in Hong Kong within the next few days, five months after it was denied entry by China. A spokesman for the U.S. consulate in Hong Kong says seven-thousand sailors from the carrier and six support ships will make the port call.

The carrier battle group was scheduled to dock in Hong Kong last November until it was informed that Beijing would not let it enter its waters. The decision was later reversed, but the vessels were already on their way back to their home ports.

Thousands of U.S. sailors were unable to meet with family members who had flown to Hong Kong to celebrate the American holiday of Thanksgiving. Since the Kitty Hawk incident, two U.S warships have visited Hong Kong this year.

China Calls on Citizens to Tone Down Nationalist Fervor

China is urging its citizens to cool their anger over international protests of the government's crackdown of anti-Chinese protests in Tibet. A number of Web sites have been created in China calling for boycotts of French goods after pro-Tibet protesters disrupted last week's Beijing Olympic torch relay in Paris.

The state-run Xinhua news agency issued an official commentary Thursday calling on Chinese to channel their "patriotic zeal" towards economic development.
The commentary appears to follow a previous pattern in which Beijing allows its citizens to express angry sentiments towards outside entities, then tries to rein them in before they spiral out of control.

Angry students and citizens staged violent anti-U.S. protests in 1999 after the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was mistakenly bombed by NATO warplanes.

South African Union Refuses To Unload Zimbabwe Weapons

South Africa's main transport union says its workers will not unload a Chinese ship carrying weapons meant for the Zimbabwean army. Randall Howard, a spokesman for the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union, said today (Friday) that South
Africa can not be seen as facilitating the flow of weapons into Zimbabwe at a time when the country's political situation is volatile.

The union position is at odds with the South African government, which said on Thursday that it could not interfere with the vessel or the arms.

The ship (the An Yue Jiang) is currently anchored outside the port of Durban waiting to dock. Local media reports say the cargo includes ammunition, mortars, and rocket-propelled grenades for the Zimbabwean military.

The military backs Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe, who is fighting to retain power after the country's disputed March 29th presidential election.

U.S. House Act Relieves Debt of Poor Countries

The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a measure designed to support debt forgiveness for some of the world's poorest nations. The House approved the measure on a 285 to 132 vote Wednesday. The bill would begin the process of debt relief for 24 of the world's poorest nations. While not specifically authorizing debt cancellation, the proposal would instruct the U.S. government to negotiate with the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on debt owed by poor nations.

Under the measure, nine nations with billions of dollars in debt would be immediately eligible for the program while 15 others would be eligible once further reforms are implemented. Lawmakers say nations must meet certain standards to qualify for the program, including demonstrating commitments to human rights, transparent governance and fighting terrorism. The bill passed with bipartisan support and there is a similar measure moving through the Senate.

Korea Charges Chairman of Samsung

Special prosecutors in South Korea have indicted Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee on charges of tax evasion and breach of trust. The charges against Lee, announced Thursday in Seoul, were brought in connection with a three-month probe of alleged corruption at South Korea's biggest family-run conglomerates, known as "chaebol." But prosecutors say they will not place the 66-year-old Lee under arrest.

The probe was launched in January after Samsung's former chief attorney said the company had created a special slush fund to bribe government officials. Lee was summoned before the special prosecutors twice this month to testify. The special prosecutors cleared the company of the bribery allegations, but acknowledged there was a conspiracy at the firm to illegally transfer control of Samsung to Lee's son, and to hide billions of dollars of his assets. The company released a statement Thursday apologizing for the scandal. It says it will announce new reform plans next week

CNN Apologizes for Commentator's Critical Remarks of China

The U.S.-based Cable News Network has issued an apology after one of its on-air commentators said China was being run by a "bunch of goons and thugs." A statement released by CNN Wednesday said it was neither Jack Cafferty's nor the network's intent to offend the Chinese people. The network said Cafferty last week was offering his opinion of the Chinese government, not China's people.

Cafferty also described Chinese exports as "junk with the lead paint on them and the poisoned pet food." Beijing had demanded an apology for his remarks.

China has criticized Western news organizations for what it says is slanted coverage of the government's crackdown on protests in Tibet.

Chinese Economy Slows in First Three Months of 2008, Inflation on Rise

China says its economy suffered only a mild setback in the first quarter of 2008, and remains resilient despite inflation and the worsening global credit crisis.

Figures released Wednesday by the government's National Bureau of Statistics shows China's economy expanded by 10-point-six percent between January and March, compared to just over 11-percent for the same period last year.

The bureau says consumer prices climbed eight-point-three percent in March, down from February's mark of eight-point-seven percent -- the highest inflation rate in nearly 12 years. The price increases are blamed in part on fierce snowstorms in January and February that disrupted factory production and destroyed crops.

Beijing fears rising inflation could spark a public backlash that will lead to social unrest.
A spokesman for the bureau of statistics says China will continue to adopt a tight monetary policy.

Bush Orders $200 Million Increase in Food Aid

President Bush has ordered a 200-million dollar increase in U.S. emergency food aid for needy countries worldwide. The White House issued a statement Monday saying the additional aid will address the impact of rising food prices. Rising prices have been blamed for food shortages and social unrest.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Monday that the rapidly escalating crisis of food availability around the world has reached emergency proportions. He urged both immediate and long-term measures to tackle the global food crisis.

Earlier, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said President Bush is "very concerned" and that he has ordered U.S. government agencies see what more can be done to help.

North Korea Marks Birthday of Late Leader, Promotes 35 Generals

North Korean leader Kim Jung Il marked one of the communist country's biggest national holidays Tuesday, the birthday of his late father, by promoting 35 generals. North Korea's state media reported that Kim promoted two officers to lieutenant general and 33 others to major general to mark the holiday. Kim often uses major holidays such as birthdays to promote military generals, the backbone of his leadership.

Kim's father, Kim Il Sung died in 1994 at the age of 82, but still holds the title of "eternal president."

The younger Kim took over the country after his father's death and has maintained a strong personality cult, despite North Korea's collapsing economy and a famine in the mid-1990s that left hundreds of thousands dead.

World Bank Chief Urges Action on Food Prices

The President of the World Bank Robert Zoellickhas urged immediate action to deal with rising food prices that have caused hunger and violence in several countries. Robert Zoellick appealed Sunday for the international community to carry out its commitments to help hungry people. Zoellick spoke at a meeting of world lenders in Washington. Zoellick said the food situation is not only a matter of short term need, but one that could also affect future generations.

In recent months, rising food prices have led to violent protests in several countries, including Egypt, Haiti and the Philippines. The food crisis was among the issues discussed at a two-day meeting of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. IMF chief Dominique Strauss Kahn warned Saturday that rising food prices could have dire consequences for people in developing countries.

Olympic Torch Arrives in Oman

The Olympic torch arrived in Oman Monday where it is expected to have a protest-free visit - the torch's sole Middle East stop on its way to Beijing. At a low-key ceremony in the capital, Muscat, the sports minister and representatives of the Chinese diplomatic mission greeted the torch upon its arrival from Tanzania. Last week, the torch relay drew large and chaotic protests in London, Paris and San Francisco.

Recent stops of the Olympic torch in Buenos Aires and Tanzania passed without major incident. Dozens of Omani athletes will carry the torch on a 20-kilometer route Monday through Muscat and along its scenic waterfront. The torch's next stop will be the Pakistani capital of Islamabad. Several legs of the international torch relay have had to be rerouted and shortened to ensure security.

UN Food Agency Predicts Huge Price Increase For Cereal

The U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization predicts a 56 percent increase in the price of cereals imported to the world's poorest nations this year, with an even sharper rise in parts of Africa. There was already a more than one-third increase in the 2006-2007 crop year. The Food and Agriculture Organization blames the price hike on depleted grain reserves, and the rising cost of oil and shipping.

The U.N. agency is offering technical assistance to many nations, and asking donor countries to increase donations and reprogram aid from other areas. The FAO says food shortages affect 37 countries, and food riots have hit at least 10 nations in the past month.

Germany Marks 75th Anniversary of Hitler Dictatorship

Germany's parliament Thursday marked the 75th anniversary of the passage of the Enabling Act -- the law that gave Nazi leader Adolf Hitler dictatorial powers. Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Horst Koehler attended the remembrance. Many of the lawmakers wore black to mourn the death of German democracy in 1933. They also heard a recording of the parliamentary debate when the only lawmaker to speak out against granting Hitler total power -- Social Democrat Otto Wels -- told the Nazis that they can take away freedom, but not honor.

Parliament allowed Hitler to issue laws without its approval two months after he was appointed German chancellor, turning Germany into a militaristic police state. By the time the Nazi regime collapsed 12 years later at the end of World War Two, tens of millions of people in Europe and the Soviet Union were dead, including six million Jews murdered in Nazi death camps.

President Bush Orders a Suspension of U.S. Troop Withdrawals from Iraq

President Bush has ordered a suspension of U.S. troop withdrawals from Iraq after July and shortened tours for incoming troops. In a major speech on the war at the White House Thursday, Mr. Bush defended his war policy, saying it has reduced sectarian violence and civilian and military deaths.

He said thanks to a surge in U.S. troops 15 months ago, U.S. and Iraqi forces have the initiative in the war and the prospect of success has been revived. But Mr. Bush acknowledged complications remain, including al-Qaida and Iranian-backed fighters.

President Bush is accepting the recommendations of his top U.S. commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus on the war. The general says U.S. troop withdrawals should be suspended starting in July to allow time for commanders to evaluate security conditions. That is expected to leave about 140-thousand troops on the ground in Iraq after a new U.S. president is elected in November.

Australian PM Acknowledges Human Rights Abuses in Tibet

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd says there are "significant" human rights problems in Tibet. Mr. Rudd made those comments Wednesday in a speech to students at Beijing University at the start of a four-day trip to China. The Australian premier says Canberra recognizes China's sovereignty over Tibet, and called on all sides to "avoid silence" and enter negotiations to find a lasting solution. Mr. Rudd also repeated his opposition to a boycott of the upcoming Beijing Olympics.

Similar comments by Mr. Rudd during his visit to the United States last week upset Chinese officials, who filed official complaints with Australian diplomats in both Beijing and Canberra.

San Francisco Braces for Protests During Olympic Torch Relay's North American Leg

San Francisco police are preparing for demonstrations during Wednesday's Olympic torch relay after protests during the London and Paris legs.

Pro-Tibet organizations say they have told activists to demonstrate peacefully and not disrupt Wednesday's torch journey. The Olympic torch arrived in San Francisco early Tuesday morning and is being kept in a secret location until the start of Wednesday's almost 10 kilometer relay journey.

A spokesman for the torch relay committee in San Francisco said Tuesday that one runner had dropped out. ome members of the city's large Chinese American community said they are proud China was chosen to host the 2008 Summer Olympics.

On Tuesday, several hundred activists Tuesday marched to express their concern about China's crackdown in Tibet and other human rights issues. Nobel prize winner and former Archbishop of South Africa Desmond Tutu and U.S. actor and pro-Tibet activist Richard Gere took part in a prayer vigil Tuesday evening calling attention to China's crackdown in Tibet.

Olympic Officials Discuss International Leg of Beijing Olympics Relay

Olympic officials are discussing the possibility of ending the international torch relay for the 2008 Olympic Games, which has been plagued by persistent protests since it was first lit last month.

International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge told reporters Tuesday that committee members will discuss ending the international leg of the 2008 relay at a meeting in Beijing this week. He did not predict an outcome. Rogge said he was deeply saddened by the recent protests in London and Paris and voiced concern about the torch moving through San Francisco on Wednesday.

The torch arrived in California early Tuesday, a day after protesters scaled the famous Golden Gate bridge to hang banners supporting Tibetan freedom from China.

China Bans Matches and Lighters on Domestic Flights

China has banned passengers from bringing matches and lighters on board domestic flights in the latest air security measures taken ahead of the Olympic games.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China made the announcement on its Web site Monday. Authorities already require travelers to remove their shoes while going through airport security, and have banned most liquids from being taken on board an aircraft.

Officials said late last month that a 19-year-old woman with an ethnic Uighur background confessed that she tried to start a fire in a plane's toilet by igniting a soda can filled with gasoline on a domestic flight from Urumqi to Beijing. The plot was discovered and no one was hurt.

Leading US Climate Scientist Warns of Global Warming Crisis

One of the leading climate scientists in the U.S. says a sharp reduction in carbon dioxide emissions is urgently needed to counter what he says is a vastly underestimated global warming problem.

The director of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies, James Hansen, says the world has already reached a "tipping point" for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Hansen says a safe atmospheric concentration level was passed 20 years ago.

He and eight co-authors summarized their findings in an article submitted to "Science" magazine. In the article, Hansen and his colleagues call for an immediate moratorium on building coal-fired power plants that do not capture their emissions, and for phasing out existing plants by 2030.

Olympics Assurances

The International Olympic Committee says it has received assurances from China's government that journalists will have free access to the Internet and that live television feeds will not be restricted during this year's Games in Beijing.

Hein Verbruggen, the head of the IOC inspection team in Beijing, told a news conference Thursday that Internet censorship would be lifted for about 30-thousand accredited and non-accredited journalists to report on the Games.

Coordination commission vice chairman Kevan Gosper said the open access would not apply to China's one-point-three billion people. Verbruggen said rights-holding broadcasters would receive live television feeds and would be free to use them as they wish.

Recent reports said China planned to bar feeds from places such as Tiananmen Square. Monday's Olympic flame arrival in Tiananmen Square was broadcast with a delay.

China to Reopen Tibet to Foreign Tourists on May 1st

China says it will reopen Tibet to foreign tourists in May, nearly two months after the remote Himalayan region was sealed off to visitors and reporters following anti-government protests in March.

Quoting Tibet's tourism bureau, China's official Xinhua news agency says independent travelers as well as those on group tours would be welcomed back on May first.

Chinese authorities began clearing Tibet of foreign tourists and banned reporters from traveling there after rare peaceful protests in mid-March turned violent. The unrest spread to other Tibetan regions in China, and reporters were barred from
those areas as well.

The announced decision to reopen Tibet to tourists comes as U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson visits China. During meetings with Chinese officials Wednesday, Paulson voiced Washington's concern about the recent violence in Tibet.

Ethnic Muslims Protest in Western China

Authorities in China's Muslim-dominated western region of Xinjiang have confirmed protests took place there late March. Media reports initially said the protests occurred over two days in Khotan prefecture. Muslim Uighurs were demanding authorities scrap a possible ban on wearing traditional head scarves. They also called for an end to the torture of ethnic Uighurs and the release of all political prisoners.

But authorities blame the demonstrations on "splittist" elements who are trying to establish a separate Islamic nation in Xinjiang. Beijing says Islamic terrorists are operating in the region, citing last month's attempted hijacking of a Chinese passenger plane from Xinjiang by a Muslim woman. Media reports also say the protests began after the death in police custody of a wealthy Uighur jade trader and philanthropist.

Beijing Denies Involvement in China Spy Case

China is denying any involvement in an espionage case in which a U.S. defense analyst pleaded guilty to passing on classified information to an alleged Chinese government agent.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu says the story is groundless. She says the aim of the case is to stir up fears that China is a threat to the rest of the world.

On Monday, U.S. Defense Department analyst Gregg Bergersen pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to delivering classified information about U.S. and Taiwanese military relations to unauthorized persons. Much of the information was related to U.S. military sales to Taiwan.

Bergersen told a U.S. court he thought his contact was aligned with Taiwan's defense ministry. Prosecutors say the contact, Tai Shen Kuo of New Orleans, Louisiana, turned the information over to a Chinese national, Yu Xin Kang. Kuo and Kang are in jail awaiting trial.

India's Soccer Captain Refuses to Join Beijing Olympic Torch Run

India's soccer captain Bhaichung Bhutia says he will not carry the Beijing Olympic torch during its run through the Indian capital of New Delhi later this month.

In a letter to the Indian Olympic Association, Bhutia said he is refusing to hold the torch because he wants to show his solidarity with Tibetans and voice his opposition to China's recent crackdown on anti-government protests by Buddhist
monks in Tibet.

Bhutia, who is Buddhist, is the second athlete to refuse to run with the torch which set off on its journey around the globe from Beijing on Monday. The Beijing Games torch is scheduled to pass through the Indian capital on April 17th.

Chinese President Hu Jintao officially launched the Olympic torch relay Monday in a ceremony at Beijing's Tiananmen Square. The torch arrived amid tight security from Greece, where Tibetan exiles and human rights activists tried unsuccessfully to disrupt a handover ceremony Sunday.

Protests that have disrupted the relay since it began last week are expected to continue as runners carry the torch to major cities across the globe in the run-up to the August Summer Games. The torch is set to pass through Tibet on its way to Mt. Everest. Human rights groups are demanding a ban on that part of the journey, until Beijing agrees to permit an international investigation of the Tibetan unrest.

France's Pernod Richard Buys Sweden's Absolut Vodka

The Swedish government has announced Monday that the French liquor group Pernod Ricard is buying Vin and Sprit - the maker of Absolut Vodka - for about nine billion dollars. The Swedish government - which currently owns Vin and Sprit - says Pernod will keep the company in Sweden. The sale ends months of speculation about who would emerge as the new owner of the state-owned company that produces Absolut - the world's third-largest premium liquor. Sweden is selling the company to help pay off the country's debt.

China Says No Punishment for Monks Involved in Protest Before Journalists

30 Buddhist monks of the Jokhang Temple stormed into the briefing Thursday and complained of a lack of religious freedom. They also disputed Beijing's claims that Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, was behind the recent protests against Chinese rule.

Baima Chilin, the vice-chairman of the Chinese-controlled Tibetan government, said Friday the monks were trying to "mislead the world's opinion." However, he said they will not be harmed or taken into detention. At the same time, he says authorities are not allowing any of the 117 monks at Jokhang to leave the temple, while some are
investigated for their role in violent protests.

The Dalai Lama said Friday that the official Chinese media has used what he called "deceit and distorted images" to portray the recent unrest in Tibet.

Hong Kong Democracy Activist to Retire

Martin Lee, one of Hong Kong's leading advocates for full democracy under Chinese communist rule, says he will retire from his seat in the legislature. Lee, who will turn 70 years old in June, says it is time for "new blood" to take over. He will not run again when his current term expires in July, after 23 years in office.

Lee has been at the forefront of the pro-democracy movement since the territory switched from British to Chinese rule in 1997, and was a founding chairman of the Democratic Party. He says his biggest regret was not ensuring universal suffrage, but promises to continue the fight for the rest of his life.

Tibetan Lamas Disrupt Government Arranged Tour for Foreign Journalists

A group of Tibetan lamas disrupted a tour for foreign journalistsThursday in Tibet's capital, Lhasa, and accused Chinese authorities of lying about recent unrest. About 30 lamas interrupted the tour while reporters were visiting Jokang Temple and being escorted by Chinese authorities. Dressed in crimson robes, some lamas shouted and others wept as they told reporters that Chinese authorities were lying about the recent unrest.

The lamas denied they were involved in the violence and refuted China's accusations that Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, was behind the recent peaceful protests that turned violent. The monks told reporters that they just want freedom.

Reporters say their Chinese government handlers tried to pull them away during the brief encounter.

China Says Uighur Woman Confesses to Attack Attempt

Chinese authorities say a 19-year-old woman with an ethnic Uighur background has confessed to taking part in a failed terrorist attack on an airplane traveling from Urumqi to Beijing. The Ministry of Public Security said Thursday that Guzalinur Turdi gave a full confession of her attempt to start a fire in a plane's toilet March seventh by igniting a soda can filled with gasoline. The plot was discovered and no one was injured. The plane was diverted to the city of Lanzhou.

Wang Lequan, Xinjiang's Communist Party chief, said last week a man was arrested with Turdi on board the flight, and a third suspect a week later admitted to masterminding, instigating, and helping carry out the crime.

China Calls Protest of Olympic Torch Lighting Shameful

China has criticized human rights activists for disrupting the lighting ceremony of the Olympic torch in Ancient Olympia, Greece, Monday, saying their actions were "shameful."

Speaking to reporters Tuesday in Beijing, China's Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang called on authorities in countries on the route to ensure the torch's smooth transit. The spokesman called attempts to sabotage the torch's progress "unpopular." Chinese state media have made no mention of Monday's protests, and are calling the lighting ceremony a success.

Chinese state media broadcast Monday's ceremony in Ancient Olympia, but cut away when protesters pushed through security and disrupted the speech of China's Olympic organizing committee chief Liu Qi.

At the ceremony, protesters unfurled a banner showing the Olympic rings as handcuffs to protest human rights abuses in China. After the torch left the site, pro-Tibetan protesters tried to stop its relay.

Nepal Police Break Up Tibetan Protest

Police in Nepal armed with batons dispersed a protest Tuesday by Tibetan refugees and monks in front of the Chinese Embassy. Nepal has seen almost daily anti-China protests since demonstrations began in the Tibetan capital of Lhasa on March 10th. At least 400 protesters were detained in Nepal Monday.

Police in Katmandu said more than 70 protesters were loaded into trucks and vans Tuesday and sent to detention centers. The U.N. human rights office in Nepal has said it is deeply concerned at the arbitrary arrests and detentions.

Nepal's border with China in the Himalayas is a key route for Tibetans fleeing Chinese rule in the region.
