Have you ever had this dilemma that your voice was ignored and your opinion was not accepted even though your idea was quite nice? And then, after a minute, another speaker produced a similar idea and it was greatly appreciated by all the listeners? I tell you, yes I did have. Sometimes I even gave up on presenting my idea just because I lacked confidence. You might wonder, what is the problem? Is it because of your English or logic or what? I know there are many reasons on different occasions, but one of the reasons is my speech lacks of the ability to convince others!
I recall I had another experience when I was working in a University. One day I was upset by something at work, was really in a terrible sorrow. I sat at the desk; typing sth into computer with fellingless, meanwhile one student came in and asked something, I answered him with a deadly low and calm voice. I saw the reaction of his- it was different and it was not bad!.
Just imagine, almost all creatures living in this world using voice as one of the main communication tools. Birds sing, tigers roar. We, need to present our idea using our voice.
When a person is exciting by happiness or angriness, the muscle of the body is in a nervous state, the pitch part in a voice wave would be high, this kind of voice fundamentally transfer the message of the nervousness. On the other hand, if a person is relaxed emotionally, the pitch part in his voice wave would be low; the voice transfers a message of comfort. Our voice is a carrier which carries our mind our opinion. When the carrier is a comfort one, the message would be better received by the listners; otherwise, it would reduce the effect of our speech.
A comfort voice includes elements such as voice volume, pitch, rate and pause.
All the famous speakers know how to make their speech sounds better , if I say “I have a dream” then you might already know whom I am refered to, yes it is, Martin Luther King, Jr’s speech. I am impressed by his strong and calm, even a bit sad voice in there. Hitler’s speech was delivered in such a firm and craziness that can make all the listeners follow his ideas. Blare the English ex-prime minister, his speech often delivered in a very clear and pleasant way which entirely shows an English gentle man’s style. Diana, she trained herslf with teacher for a banquet speech. She delived her speech in a calme, elegant yet distant with a royal dignity just like the way we saw her on TV. The banquet speech of hers was remarked later a great and respetable speech. Chairman Mao who did not own a perfect voice by nature, as his voice is a bit femininen, however, his speechs were always great. He could make a humorous speech out of a serious topic, and he could present a difficult topic in an easy understanding way. He could engage listeners to his speech.
Generally, No matter what kind of voice we have by nature, we all can make our speech sounds better by using presenting skills, such as paying attenttention to the content, structure of the speech, and making yourself comfortable before the presentation, have a deep breathe, making vocal variety smoothly and naturally. Use a tap recorder to record your speech would be helpful for your formal speech. By doing this, presenting skills would be improved and our confidence would be found back.
We are not perfect but we can improve, by practicing we would find our voice power, with it we could fly towards our dreams! (Copy rights reserved)
