PGA National Resort & Spa opened its doors (and fairways) in 1981. Developed and owned exclusively by E. Llwyd Ecclestone for the next 25 years, the legendary golf resort was sold in August 2006 to Walton Street Capital, LLC, a Chicago-based real estate investment firm. From its inception, championship golf has been a key element in PGA National’s success, beginning in 1982 with the PGA Championship. The Champion course, originally designed by George and Tom Fazio and later re-designed by Jack Nicklaus has hosted over 19 major PGA tournament events, the 1983 Ryder Cup and now the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic. The resort also has four other master-designed golf courses which, like The Champ, are all in their best condition ever—The Haig, The Squire, The General and The Estate. George and Tom Fazio designed The Champ, The Haig and The Squire. The General was designed by and named for Arnold Palmer, and The Estate was designed by Karl Litten. PGA National’s Academy of Golf is now managed and operated by the renowned Golf Digest Schools, and all five courses now offer caddies and forecaddies, a very popular program that was started on The Champ on Dec. 1, 2004.
Guests have learned over the years that the PGA National Resort & Spa is more than just golf. The world-class resort also features a multimillion, 40,000-square-foot, world-class spa, which opened in 1991; nine swimming pools; eight restaurants and lounges; a 35,000-square-foot conference wing; 19 Har-Tru clay tennis courts; a 26-acre lake; a croquet complex; and a 34,000 square foot health and racquet club with a personal training facility.
