（转自：波波@RBM 的翻译）前探员Adrian Monk（Tony Shalhoub），拥有超强的瞬间记忆力和洞察力，即使是再细小不过的线索都难逃他的法眼，因此，使得他成为了当地警界的一个传奇。不过，自他的妻子被人谋杀后，蒙克似乎变了一个人，巨大的伤痛使他无法自拔，并出现了种种强迫性症状。一个好端端的蒙克变得脾气暴躁，任何一点小事都可能激怒他：细菌、人群、高度——甚至还包括牛奶。这些症状不但渐渐令他丢了工作，更令其日常生活受到困扰。离开旧金山警局之后, MONK一直在当私家侦探，专门解决疑难的案件，他希望可以说服他的前上司Leland Stottlemeyer队长（Ted Levine），让他回归警队效力。第一季里，Stottlemeyer是摇摆不定，一方面，monk的能力确实罕见，他很需要monk的帮忙，另一方面，他却十分讨厌monk的那种精神问题。但Stottlemeyer已经开始更多的变成monk的一个朋友，而不只是上司，并经常叫monk到现场帮忙。可还是因为monk的那些精神问题，Stottlemeyer始终不肯让monk佩枪，也不相信monk可以制服任何一名歹徒。与此同时， Stottlemeyer的助手，Randall Disher副队长（Jason Gray-Stanford）似乎也在动摇。正一点一点地被monk的能力所征服。
