A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake has rocked the northern Philippines and southern Taiwan, the US Geological Survey says.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 22km under the seabed in the Philippines\' Batan Islands region at 11.57am (AEST) it said.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

Taiwan\'s Central Weather Bureau measured the quake at 6.8 on the Richter scale and located it a depth of 46km.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — Officials say a powerful earthquake has struck in the Pacific Ocean off southeastern Taiwan, but no damage or injuries have been reported.

Taiwan\'s Central Weather Bureau says the magnitude 6.8 quake hit at around 9:57 a.m. on Sunday. The U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 6.4.

The quake was faintly felt in Taiwan.

The bureau says the quake was centered 29 miles below the Pacific Ocean\'s surface about 140 miles south of the island of Lanyu. That\'s about 180 miles southeast of the capital, Taipei.

MANILA--A strong 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked the northern Philippines and southern Taiwan on Sunday, the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 22 kilometers (14 miles) under the seabed in the Philippines\' Batanes Islands region at 0157 GMT, it said.

There were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage and no tsunami warning was issued.

Taiwan\'s Central Weather Bureau measured the quake at 6.8 on the Richter scale and located it a depth of 46 kilometers.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake had a magnitude of 6.3 with an epicentre about 76 kilometers west of the Batanes town of Basco.

The quake was felt strongly in Basco but was barely noticeable in the northern provinces of the Philippines\' main island of Luzon, the institute said, adding that aftershocks were expected.

It was also felt in southern counties of Taiwan.
