POLICE in New South Wales say they will be out in force during the Labour Day long weekend, targeting drink-driving, speeding, driver fatigue and seatbelt offences.
Police are especially concerned because the weekend marks the start of the spring school holidays and the NRL and AFL grand finals.
“It’s an Aussie tradition to go down to the pub or have family and friends over to watch the footy finals and enjoy a few drinks,” traffic services commander John Hartley said.
“However, it would be utterly irresponsible to do so and then get behind the wheel at the end of the night.”
Double demerit points for traffic offences will be enforced from midnight tonight until midnight on Monday.
Chief Superintendent Hartley said police were trying to send a clear message that if motorists act irresponsibly over the holiday weekend, “you will be caught”.
“It might not be yourself you kill by playing up behind the wheel (but) it might be another innocent road user,” he said.
The death toll on NSW roads has reached 388 this year - nine more than for the corresponding period last year.
Supt Hartley said the NRL final at Telstra Stadium will increase traffic on Sydney roads, and that drivers should exercise patience on both local and long-distance journeys.
Ticket holders to the rugby league grand final should consider taking the train or special-event buses instead of driving, he said.
