40D can't lock focus while recomposing. Any ideas?

My 40D can\'t lock focus while recomposing the shots, especially when there is a high backgroud contrast. Press the shutter halfway and try to recompose the shots. But the focus lock is lost when I move to recompose. What is the problem here? Can somebody offer some clues? Thanks a lot.
